SINGAPORE : For most people, the MRT is just a means of transport.
But for 52 men and women, it might be the route to wedded bliss as they took part in the nation’s first speed—dating event on the MRT on Sunday.
They took a return trip from Boon Lay MRT station to Pasir Ris MRT station in the hope of finding a little romance.
Jeraldine Toh, Bank Relationship Manager, said: "This is the first time, in Singapore that we actually hold speed—dating on the MRT, so I thought it might be very exciting."
Michael Wee, Technician, said: "I would like to widen my circle of friends, and because I find that in Singapore, it’s quite a bit rush; sometimes due to work, we’re not able to meet the opposite sex. So this is my objective to meet more friends."
So with a little encouragement and dating tips from the MP of West Coast GRC, S Iswaran, they were off to a roaring start.
Organised by the Social Development Service in conjunction with the Ayer Rajah—West Coast Family Life Champion and the Youth Executive Committee, it is one of many events for singles aged 20 to 40 to interact.
Each pair is given only two stations’ worth of time, or approximately 6 minutes, to talk before moving on and no one is wasting any time.
Ms Toh said: "I mean there’s a lot of people I still haven’t met yet. So we are still rotating. And I hope among them, I can find a friend."
Mr Wee said: "Quite happy, because I need to meet more friends."
So while the rest of the nation is firmly on planet Earth, some of these lucky singles are already on Cloud Nine. — CNA/ch
