SINGAPORE: Some residents at Lorong Gambir in Serangoon have noticed cracks on their walls, and many blame the construction works nearby.
Residents at Lorong Gambir at Serangoon Avenue 1 fear the cracks could endanger lives if left unchecked.
There are also cracks outside their houses, on the road.
"Even the whole pillar has moved, that's why our door is warped and can't even shut properly. So we're afraid that in the long-run because the soil here is very soft, we're afraid that even our house may collapse," says one resident.
"We suspect it must be the MRT, I guess they build something, it caused vibration," says another.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says it is aware that the ground at Lorong Gambir is "soft and highly compressible".
LTA adds that it has been monitoring construction works closely and that the properties are not structurally affected.
But even if the buildings are safe, drains are another cause for concern.
Puddles have formed in the cracks, and residents worry these could become mosquito breeding grounds. - CNA/yy
