Malaysia happy to connect to S'pore via MRT: Syed Hamid

  KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is keen on fresh negotiations with Singapore on a new bridge linking the island with the southern Malaysian state of Johor.
  
  The Malaysian Foreign Minister says there is no better time than now to pursue the issue, with bilateral relations on the upswing.
  
  Mr Syed Hamid Albar also says Malaysia will be happy to be connected to Singapore via the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system.

  "The bridge is important, because I think we want give a different face to the southern gate to MalaysiaÂ…We are very happy to be integrated together on the MRT, and it will serve well both sides, Singapore as well as the internal Iskandar Development Region.
  
  "At the same time, we also have hopefully our railway to Johor and from Johor connected to the other system," he says.

  Whether they like it or not, the rail way to Tanjong Pagar Station must be active. If they stop rail services for six months, the land they own along the railway track will revert back to Singapore.
  So die die KTM must have rail service to Singapore.
  
  Whatever they announce, we must bear in mind that there are many factions in Malaysian politics. One party will like a course of action, another will dislike it. And those in between will play along with the winner. And what ever the Malaysian PM or other ministers says, or even signs, is not binding. Unless ratified by their parliament.
  
  So don't be too hopeful by their announcements.

  It's not invading...
  It's not known how it will be connected yet. Anyway connection of MRT to Malaysia has been announced many years back but was shelved.
  
  Rail service (passenger & freight) are important to all people, Singaporean & Malaysian.
  
  During long weekend/holiday express trains' ticket is always hard to get & there is always a long container train towards the Tanjong Pagar yard.

  Johor's Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman again announced today that the Iskandar Development Region in Johor will have a variety of multi-modal transportation system that includes buses, commuter trains, taxis, trams and even (yes, he specifically mentioned this) the MRT. He also said a formal briefing on IDR's proposed transportation system will be made on Monday.
  
  Interestingly at the news conference, the map of the IDR includes a third link to Singapore, which is to link Punggol to the Eastern District of the IDR.
