NEL train disruption last July due to defective tool

The Land Transport Authority has finished its investigations into a North East Line train service breakdown in July last year.

The seven-hour disruption, which affected hundreds of commuters, was one of the longest in Singapore's MRT history.

At the time, authorities said a wire, which supplied electricity to the trains, had come loose.

LTA's investigations have concluded that the dewirement was due to the poor quality of a piece of equipment called a porcelain insulator.

These findings have been verified by an independent assessor.

Since then, the operator has tightened its maintenance regime of the insulators and will continue with its inspections of the insulators on a two-monthly basis.

The French supplier has also checked and certified that all its existing insulators are free of defects.

LTA says the disruption was a one-off situation and that no action will be taken against the operator. - CNA/ir
