Singapore is re-looking at how it can attract investments and support economic growth in the future.
In a first ever major mid-term review of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's 10-year rolling Concept Plan, the government is making adjustments in view of the changing economic climate.
The government is upbeat over the long term economic growth potential in the region.
This is evident in its move to adjust the population parameter for the Concept Plan from the current 5.5 million to 6.5 million.
What this means is, based on this enlarged population, Singapore would have to re-look at how it apportion land for various uses.
To tap into investment opportunities in high value-added industries, the government is looking into setting aside land for the new growth sectors such as the aerospace industry, which has grown by more than 12 percent annually over the past 15 years.
Besides enhancing and upgrading the air and sea ports, the government also plans to set aside more land and invest in more infrastructure ahead of time.
The island's transportation network is set to be beefed up for better connectivity.
Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development, says: "LTA is currently carrying out feasibility studies for a new 33-station Downtown Line. This 40 km underground line will link up the developments in Marina Bay to estates in the Choa Chu Kang/Bukit Panjang/Bukit Timah corridor, and the MacPherson /Bedok Reservoir/Tampines corridor. Beyond that, LTA will be evaluating other new lines as well as extensions to current lines in different parts of Singapore which are currently under-served by the RTS network. In the long term, we may need to at least double our rail network."
The government will also enhance and create new areas to meet the demand for space for financial and business services.
This includes transforming Jurong into another hub like the Tampines Regional Centre, one up north in Woodlands and a sub-Regional Centre in Paya Lebar. - CNA/ch
maybe ERL and BTL trains share the same DTL tracks in town? means they merge into the DTL section at Promenade and then continue until Chinatown, with alternate trains out going to either BTL or ERL?Originally posted by SMRT 32373238:33-stn downtown line.... means possibility of BTL and ERL connected? with same train makes plying them?
i thought the DTE stretch of Promenade to CNT stns were part of Circle Line?Originally posted by ^tamago^:maybe ERL and BTL trains share the same DTL tracks in town? means they merge into the DTL section at Promenade and then continue until Chinatown, with alternate trains out going to either BTL or ERL?
no way man... will be full MRT lines for u...Originally posted by NickL_C151:i hope they will do tampines/marine parade - bukit panjang. hopefully they don't make that *toot* shuttle train like changi airport.
Most likely it'll be Phase 1 of the 40km Downtown line. =)Originally posted by SMRT 32373238:i thought the DTE stretch of Promenade to CNT stns were part of Circle Line?
This is the North-Shore line in planning, linking Woodlands/Yishun -> Punggol -> Pasir Ris/Tampines.Originally posted by pierre^^:We need a line from punggol NEL to maybe woodland
de from punggol one more line to pasir ris
yea
Train fares very expensive...Originally posted by pierre^^:We need a line from punggol NEL to maybe woodland

Which is why Punggol has an extra platform(s) underneath the current NEL platforms built; they're planning for North Shore Line.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Train fares very expensive...
Anyway, Punggol is one end of the NEL. Kind of redundant to have Dhoby Ghaut if it goes straight to Woodlands.
Punggol to Pasir Ris... hmm...
well if its is part of the downtown line then it will be.. cos IR will be completed soon and also the plans and blueprints of the DTE came out first.Originally posted by stituss:Most likely it'll be Phase 1 of the 40km Downtown line. =)
well come 2010 DBG stn gonna be more redundant cos of opening of CCL stage 3, connecting serangoon to bishan...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Train fares very expensive...

I heard it is underground and the station box is already done up below Punggol NEL station.Originally posted by Novawin™:Just wondering if North Shore Line will be heavy rail (6 carriage per train) or medium rail (3 carriage per train).
But I guess that North Shore Line is more likely to feature driverless 3-carriage train like CCL although I heard somewhere that North Shore Line will be building on elevated ground if I am not wrong.
eh but if u want to go woodlands taking trains, u have to waste time going to the central then go back up =xOriginally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Train fares very expensive...

Oh! They already built another station for North Shore Line? So fast? Will I able to spot that station below Punggol NEL station when I am going there next time?Originally posted by ^tamago^:I heard it is underground and the station box is already done up below Punggol NEL station.
You can check this outOriginally posted by tut4nkh4m3n:a map showing all the stops would really help...
