For God's sake, and seriously, for the love of all things alive, just install platform barriers already. I don't care how much they cost, I don't care whether train fares might get doubled, tripled, even WTFed because of the barriers, just put them in there. Please. I'm really on my knees now. Just please. We can't have any more of this happening...
But, as I said in the buses forum before, talking to SMRT is worse than talking to a wall
. And they won't install them until the disruptions cut into their big fat ugly wallets. Then they will install, because "we can't have such disruptions eating into our profits" . All they care is money, money, and more money... -

They could actually spend the money the spend on human resources to look out for people who may jump and the money involved in counselling train drivers who were affected due to the jump on the expenses on some of the blast doors.

And this idea I got from Japan, those who went to Tokyo and any part of Japan will know this.
Sounding the horn has psychological effects and really can deter people from jumping, I definitely agree and support SMRT in doing this measure. Frankly, I am willing to be disturbed by horns every several minutes in a day than to see ppl being cut into peices several times a week/month. -

another method used in japan is to install mirrors beside the track so u will see urself on the mirror and get a wake-up call. but this is not possible on our elevated stations, and indeed the above mirrors were found in an underground station by the tunnel wall....

I refer to the report, "Second man hit by train in four days" (Dec 6).
Protective platform screens have been previously ruled out by SMRT as too expensive to build. The significant number of falls onto train tracks over the past few years, and the widespread disruption this causes to thousands of commuters, should make SMRT think twice about resolving this problem.
It may still be a cheaper alternative, in the long run, to erect protection screens on MRT station platforms.
There are only two conclusions we can draw from the seemingly regular suicide jumps onto MRT tracks in front of an oncoming train — either our MRT stations are designed to be so unsafe that it is easy to fall onto the tracks, or there is something not right in our society that people would choose to end their lives in this highly visible method so as to cause the maximum amount of chaos for others.
Either reason is a blight on Singapore's reputation. Suppressing such news may prevent copycat suicides, but the root causes of such desperate suicidal behaviour must be tackled vigorously and remedied.

I refer to the letter, "Disrupted trains a security threat" (Dec 6). I seriously doubt there would be mass-suicide plots at our stations. Perhaps it's time we stop treating these jumpers as "victims" — they are, in fact, perpetrators against the law.
It's time potential jumpers realise how their acts are really anti-social, lacking in civic mindedness, not to mention costly.
The authorities should increase the fine for disrupting train services and impose it on the jumper's family members after the misdemeanour.

The only way to prevent people from committing suicide is to chain every person in Singapore up.
Of course, having it totally covered prevents ppl from doing it in mrt station whether on purpose or due to other factors.
But is SMRT willing to accept the burden and not pass it back to the end user? -
When more people start jumping off buildings, you expect HDB to implement air beds at void decks? If more people slash thier wrists, ban all cutting tools?

Installing gates have become some impossible reality as I can see. Some platforms on the Tokyo's Hanzomon line just got screen doors last year, but suicide rates are equally high in Japan.
Those JR lines in the west areas, special limited express trains go up to 130km/h and people just get sliced without the driver knowing immediately. The lights are just normal tungsten lights and there would be no warning until a bang or something hits the windscreen.
Sounding the horn, building doors, these are just some methods that can stop in last minute, not the root of the problem. -

I agree! Those American locomotive also got sound the horn when approaching near the station or level crossing.
