  Why is it that they never touch HK island
  
  Even the new West Rail is so weird, never even touch to Victoria Harbour area...

  1) When the KCRC (East Rail) was built between 1906 - 1910, due to historical, geographical and especially technological reasons (inability to build any cross-harbour tunnels), the East Rail cannot reach HK island.
  
  However, with the advance of technology, the East Rail extension to HK island might be constructed soon. (The route is still under planning)
  
  2) As for West Rail, the HK government chose not to let it to extend to HK island. They chose to let the West Rail to connect to East Rail.
  
  The reason being West Rail users can connect to MTR at West Rail's Kowloon terminus (Nam Cheong) for HK island.

  Will the MTR and KCRC possible merger make any effect?

  1) Merger..........the effect is: project will continue, but maybe under the name of MTR.
  
  2) Yes, West Rail will extend to connect East Rail in 2009 (estimated). The extension is named South Kowloon Line.
