Retrofitting of SMRT 1st Generation Trains

SMRT has begun retrofitting first generation trains. 001 had the honour of doing its test run today on the NSL (002's 3 cabs have not been touched yet) with Train Run Number (TRN) "001".
Seats on every cab will now have the three colours, red, green and blue. The outer two seats will be the original colours, followed by their darker variants for the middle 3 seats.
The interior flooring has been re-done, but more significantly, the exterior of the train (002 included) is now as-per 3rd generation trains i.e. black colour with thicker red lining.

just to add on, the darker variants, orange is actually using brown. wait for my video upload later.

will the lifespan of the trains be extended because of this?

no. it should be a end-life upgrade. similar to NAC buses being converted to CAC with only 5-8 years (less than half the true life span) left.

Thanks for sharing the pics with us. I have one word for it . Hideous . But I should reserve that word until I see it for myself.
They should get rid of that noisy Siemen trains. Irritating noises that train makes. -
It is exactly the same layout as the Kawasaki 2000 trains.

up to date is 001/002 the only train being retrofitted?
seen a flash of it at midnight really long ago and i though i was dreaming...
have been looking for it but still havent found it... -

i also saw it parking on the shorter test track at bishan.
001/002 is so far the only one being retrofitted. seems like they can't decide on the design etc. -
Is this retrofitting a part of the celebration of SMRT 20th anniversary('97-'07)?
Just like what Hong Kong MTR did at its 20th anniversary. -

A reliable source stated that all 66 KHI C151 trains will be refurbished. The trains are now in their midlife age after more than 15 years in service since 1987. The major refurbishment aims to replace major items of equipment that have degraded with aging, wear and tear. Coinciding with this would be the opportunity to incorporate operational, performance and safety enhancements for the trains. These will include larger stand-back space at the doorways for better accessibility into saloon and spaces for physically impaired at selected cars. Additional line flow fans to ventilate and enhance interior comfort for commuters.
Better in-train announcements regulated through ambient sound level monitoring control and increase in speakers. The refurbishment work is done progressively because SMRT can't afford to put too many units off service.
The refurbishment work is carried out in the Rolling Stock Workshops at Bishan Depot. The first refurbished train was expected to roll out in May 06 and the last train to complete in April 2008. Having said so, the first few units are already undergoing tests at Ang Mo Kio / Yishun / Bishan after revenue hours. -

Update: 4 C151 trains are currently in various stages of upgrading. The first upgraded trains will be put into passenger service from late October 2006.
