Stations built to withstand nukes?

  I noticed our underground stations, especially those on the NEL, are built very deep. The escalator ride on the latter seems longer than the NSL and EWL ones.
  
  Since land is scarce in Singapore, the planners have come up with the idea of using underground MRT stations as Civil Defence shelters in times of emergency. But what if Singapore is nuked? Can the underground stations withstand it?

  Now that reminds me. Is there a reason why the ticket office, turnstile and passenger service centre must be located in the basement? Couldn't these facilities be on street level while the platform is on Basement 1?

  I think the NEL's stations or even the CCL's stations can withstand nukes but if there is real emergency, then also no one will know what will happen.

  Don't you find it ironic to have stations that can withstand a nuke, when the whole country and a little of its north neighbour can be wiped out with just one?

  alamak, nuke liao u escape the inferno furnace but u will be trapped underground for decades....once u go out u ganna irradiated liao and then will die a more miserable death.... i rather die immediately then 'ai si buay si' suffer for a long time then die.

  I dun think it is for nukes. But maybe as a anti bomb stations. Air raid can hide there.

  then we might as well have the platforms on street level too!! underground stations were built to save space or because there wasnt enough space thats why everything is crammed downstairs..
