Sengkang and Buangkok ppl shoudlbe lucky their estate wasnt call "Woodbridge".. remember Jalan Woodbridge at today's renamed Gerald Drive.. if government go crazy, entire sengkang could be called "woodbridge"

Each village was built and named after the chinese clans which built houses and controls that part of the river. "Chu" means house in hokkien, and "kang" means river. and yes. Choa should be Chua. Yio should be Yeo.. but then, its spelled Choa may be due to dialect to english translation spelling.

therefore, Toa Payoh means Big Swampy (land).
as stated, its name is partially hokkien and melayu.
however, Ang Mo Kio is fully Hokkien meaning Caucasian Bridge. (Kio means Bridge).
i think only these 2 places are derived from chinese dialect names, excluding the xx chu kangs..
most places in singapore, are in melayu, like Bukit, Jalan, Lorong, Tanah, Tinggi, Bahru, etc.. -
