cos usually i would save up for the big stuffs
and i see people would use all the simpler items, ad still be good

item buying imho is very individual one..
Some players work better with boots, others work best with mass iron wood at start.
Depends on how you play. -
item buying: at the start of the game you see which hero you are, see their heroes, then decide on an item build. if you're a late gamer like razor or whatever, have the discipline to stay in your lane, dont go for too much, just last hit last hit, heck care the other lanes, just focus on staying in your lane and the creeps.
set targets for when to get your desired items. if it's a pub, please do not be one of those dicks who say "i am defending top against the creeps, you all plz defend 2v5 k thanks" and use common sense on when your team needs help.
personally, i find this is damn boring which is why i play ganker for my team.. all i need is the imba bottle. and a hero like bm.
EDIT: i see my post and i decide it's too damn long-winded. so i summarise: see the situation and use your brain. -
People buy core items to assist in their farming of 'big items' more easily. This is especially for heroes with low damage in early game.

hm i actualy research if buying more expensive or cheap items is the best
If your hero is a melee, buy the starting null ,bracer or anything that is cheap.
buy ring of regen +2 hp /sec.
If im a melee, i will buy 2 small things (null, bracer or slipper), depending wat is your hero speciality(agi, str or int) and one +2hp/sec, and power thread and one tele scroll
If im range. i buy all branch. one power thread. and 1 tele scroll and save the rest for the expensive item
one tele scroll is the best to save yourself from hero that cant stun u at all. but only make it back to town if your hp is half . not when your hp is red then only tele. lol
range can get more money in the start, melee is terrible especially when u face a pro ranged enemy who doesnt even give u the chance to get near creeps -

like a bb for example, the 2x ring of regen can be used to make the hood of defiance etc.
so yes, it all depends on the individual hero. -

if u have stunners in your lane you might like to get some bracers.
