After CNY, taxi companies might have to retrench their staffs...from DRO to companies' car service technician..and all those lau kok kok re employed employees would most probably show the door/gate out. As taxi on the road dwindled, why need so many useless staffs walking here and there.

No matter how you look at it, taxi companies will shrink, their changes and scheme do not really work to the satisfaction of drivers, who are facing a stiff competition. Why? because unlike Uber and Grab that have a young management with new thinking, hyperactive and always looking creating something, taxi companies, on the other hand, still hold on to their lau kok kok, ai koon koon, pui pui, dine and wine management, that alone is a failure, a failure to have a courage to change and adapt. It is just like a old car, keep giving problem, and keep using the same solution to solve it, no other way...so why not sell and buy a new one. Taxi companies management are today, out of date, keep holding to the same old assholes that produce the same solution and same shit is not going to change thing, but instead, worsen the situation by providing shitty solution that still want to eat taxi drivers. Even they restructure, the same shit remain, only the soup changed. My suggestion is to re engineer the whole taxis management, meaning throw away the shit and soup and the bowl out...start from new blood again.

They are not performing and too comfy in their jobs. Must follow Surbana Jurong's method. Jitao sacked a whole lot of under performing executives.
Until today, they only know how to introduce half baked incentives bit by bit. Nobody has the guts to overhaul the entire taxi pricing structure.
1. Remove CBD surcharges.
2. Remove or reduce 25% (e.g. 15%) peak hour and 50% midnight surcharge (e.g. 25%).
3. Have one standard flag down fare and higher tariff e.g. 30 cts per 300 km fixed regardless whether first 10 km or not.
In its place, introduce surge pricing. If CBD or any area suddenly got demand, then a surcharge kicks in for booking calls to match PHV's surge pricing.
All the surcharges (CBD, 25% etc) were meant to tamper demand and encourage supply. That is, when demand is high, surcharges will help reduce demand and at the same time increase supply to balance out.
However, with pirates operating today, these mechanisms are no longer effective nor relevant. There is no longer any peak demand because including pirates, the supply today is at least 40K taxis and PHV.
Scared taxi drivers throw key? Economy so bad, who dare to throw key? Reduce rental lor. So many already throw key and move to PHV even with all the surcharges in place. Why? Cos simply no demand for taxis and PHV offering incentives.
Reducing taxi rental and overhauling the taxi fares at the same time is the way to go. Chemo the cancer or it will spread.
May not be so extreme as suggested above but certainly some changes are needed.

street pickup is still only taxi. it is immediate premium service? rider no need to wait. why reduce the fares?
the competition is booking service. taxi should implement their private booking service too.
compete in the rates during low demand period. surge when there is high demand like uber and grab work.
taxi service too honest, need to learn legally chop carrot when there is high demand.
imagine when there is high demand, phv n taxi all surge, what will be the public response?
this is wat the government n public ask for.
ungrateful to taxi service to keep the fares affordable even during high demand period.
taxi running on diesel definitely got advantage over phv that use petrol on the running cost.
in parallel, taxi campany should think of way to keep the rental low in order to compete with phv on fares to force phv totally not worth the effort to operate. kick them out of the competition.

not totally true on that. cause gahmen's profits are not affected yet. Or shall i say they are only affected because there's no growth income. but as long still maintaining their profits / rice bowls, why should they be bothered? In the 1st place, why will the rental be so damn high or dint even depreciate at all? Because they already calculate and include the loss already. You see whether they bring down the rental to $40 per day. You see what's the response?

You sound as government is running the taxi companies.

Eh...suddenly this thread, all these kong wu kong bo TDs and Phv cum ex taxi drivers come out again...hmmm. A simple analogy is like this, Taxis will slowly diminish with Singapore older folks, as many thrown keys, those drivers left behind will have more chances to pick at the street and at the taxi Q, the competition for calls/booking will be fierce and furious, leaving less call for taxis even if you have an apps like cdg, you still hv to compete at a cut throat low fares with Phv, not to mention cdg weak/or save cost on marketing on their apps and promotion. So, as Singapore move toward millennium (100 years of nation building) taxi will disappear together with our local older folks, the new gen, filled with the 2nd and 3rd generations of our current foreigners PR and new citizens will be on Phv...if not, it will be on driverless. So unlike taxis that had a long history in Singapore, Phv will he shortlived once higher technology take over.

Street pick?
1. Sometimes wait one hour oso no taxi come. It is not definite that you can get a taxi especially if you are in a rush. And you have to compete with other ppl sometimes.
2. Some taxis green lantern oso dun stop.
3. Some stop but want to conduct interview first.
So, pax say PHUI! and go take grab and uber better.
If you can have a car come right to your doorstep to pick you up and cost less than hailing a taxi on the street during peak hours, what will people choose?
That's why night time hardly any call and any street pax nowadays. It's always the price and service. Cheaper, more guaranteed and more convenient. That's what ppl want.
Lowering rentals alone will not solve the demand issue.

Pax not phui lah, pax see the pricing, now they have the luxury to check and compare, there are still alots of 50s years and above paxs who might not know Uber and Grab or choose to take taxi.. hailing on the street, these are our street paxs who supported us. Singapore is having an aging population, there are more old then youngs, Given the so called open economy, Phv had always wanted to remove taxis thru low fares competition, and after 3 years of aggressive low fares and promotion + incentives, have they remove the taxi on the road??? Why?? because Singapore taxis system is good and well structured, driven by locals. And govt jolly well know that if taxis is off the road, Phv will surge like no body business, at present, taxi fares are taken as a bench marker to most paxs, especially the younger ones and FTs like foreign ABNN, once phv surge, they take taxis, once phv give promotion, no surge, they go for Phv, but if one day, no more taxi fares to compare....siao liao

I personally feel that elderly ppl are usually thrifty so seldom take cab leh.
During my early to mid twenties, i took cab to work very frequently. Night time after partying also take midnight cab without blinking an eye.
Nowadays before i take cab, i develop a habit to take a look at the fixed price and estimated price of grabcar/ grabtaxi before deciding.
Children nowadays also use grabcar cashless booking to fetch their illiterate parents to their destinations.
I must say it is very successful.

Elderly ppl still have the mindset that taxis are a luxury. Fetched many elderly ppl to work. They always request that I stop the taxi some distance from the gate. Cos they scared colleagues see them take taxi and kong wu kong bo.

Most elderly ppl are retirees and usually have more time to travel by public transport.

Today elderly are more open and modern than the past, past time elderly always think for their descendent, save here, save there keep money until gao gao, end up family unrest over her $$, sons fight over each other, daughters argue here and there. No peace till the end. So today elderly are more than willing to spent and enjoy their own life rather than leaving it for their si gina sons or grandsons.

I noticed lately number of taxis queuing at taxi stand have significantly reduced. Business getting better or too many throw keys?
