Right, earn a few dollars more per day if double-shifted. But not always want newer cars means can get it one.

I used to drive a Hyundai auto car more than 10 yrs ago. To stop, on level road or hill, after stopping just let go of the brake and the car will still stop. Now, I just tried a rented car with keyless entry. To start car, has to step on the brake first. To stop, has to keep stepping on the brake or else the car will move... wa lau... very tiring. Move also gotto step, stop also gotto step, leg damn strain.
Are all cars like that? What about taxis?

I heard all the "good deal" cars at the 4 other smaller taxi companies all snatched up. Only the very close to Comfort rate cars left only.

Good deal cars means it's new and rental very low? I'm gg to signup for TVDL this afternoon. Hope to learn more lessons from you guys here...

My definition of "Good car deal" is low rental and good fuel efficiency. In other words lower overall cost of doing taxi business. New or old does not really matter as the older cars like 5 years old cars are not really that old too.

Low rental I would feel is $75 onwards but below $100? SMRT's (http://www.smrt.com.sg/Join-Us/Taxi-Hirers/Rental-Rates) lowest rental is HYUNDAI AZERA @ $73.60 but no rent-free days nor bonuses. Haiz...
I hope to find one low rental one with rent-free days and bonuses (even for relief).
Factor this into consideration too: non-Comfort taxis flagged-down rates $0.50-$0.70 higher too. So rental offset assuming 20 customers per day is another $10 to $14. However smaller-4 companies more difficult to find relief drivers.

But if you can find a good old cab, u can earn alot.
I think almost all old Sonata in good shape because they are serviced every month. However old Sonata fuel efficiency some not so good. I have driven at least 4 old Sonatas already but never had breakdown problems before. Fuel efficiency also heng suay one. Some older Sonatas that I had driven had better fuel efficiency than not so old ones.
The problem could be improved if you tell the mechanics about the fuel efficiency problem. They would ramp up the engine to remove excess carbon deposited in at least one core component. Got to know this because one of the old Sonatas that I had driven kept having the "Engine Amber light" lited up. Fuel efficiency was extremely low whet it lited up. The problem was finally solved when they changed with a new spare part for the problem and after they ramped the engine to remove the carbon.
Take new vehicle la
Will make ur taxi driving journey peaceful
How much difference nia in rental?
Now relief also don't want to drive old vehicle leh
Sonata? mai la mai la thank u Wahahaha

The real situation whether hirer or relief is you would not always get the vehicle that you want.
If you are hirer, you only can choose the left overs in the garage. If you OMO, then very stupid to chose i40 if you have a choice. If you calculate the rental difference, different starting charge and fuel efficiency for 30 day, it amounts to more than $200 per month.
If you are relief, you choose the first one that meets your requirements. Normally it is proximity to home, timing and rental. If a relief chooses based on new or old car, he is too fussy. I have driven i40 before too and I find Sonatas safer to drive because of better rear visibility. However I must say i40s are very fuel efficient. You actually could make slightly more money from i40 per day if you are double-shifted and fetch at least 20 customers per shift. However, customers prefer Sonatas.
All taxi companies use all the taxi to the max of 7 years. So someone has to drive old vehicles. Comfort actually waive the $1000 deposit if new drivers sign up as hirer for approximiately 3-yr old Sonatas after they have gotten their taxi license.
Yesterday went to sign up for TVDL, saw alot of red taxis cramming into a parking lot. Then alot of uncles in the classrooms taking lessons. All look damn sian like that. Signed up for the course, wah lau, classes are full and gotto wait for the next class a few weeks later. I must get ready for rainy days by having a taxi license.
There are so many potential TDs now... classes are full... if only govt reduce or waive COE for taxis, else there will be much less taxis on the road.
I saw this poster at STA looking for TDs for electric taxis "HDT GoElectric - www.hdt.com.sg, Call 67157868". Anybody got any advise on the pros and cons of driving an electric car? The website says "With 65 charging stations to be set up all over Singapore, going electric is easy;" Maybe now only very few power charging station...
