Then still get complains about new drivers not knowing the routes well enough or taking longer routes. But maybe problematic drivers still have as many complains as new birds.

i40 no count hor
But new drivers who were not recommended in also cannot get i40.
Don't know why they are doing this because they already approached potential taxi drivers when they are taking the Singapore Taxi Academy course at Citicab building before they got their license. They also waive them from having to pay $1000 deposit if they are able to get the taxi license.
No taxi license one you recommend in also no use and would be rejected.
Those taking courses at Woodlands would be approached by SMRT. Those at Sin Ming would be approached by Comfort. Maybe Comfort does not send recruitment team to approach those receiving lessons at Kim Yan Road.
If the new hirer is your relief, you also don not want him or her to leave you and therefore would not recommend him or her in. Also if he or she wants to become a hirer, he or she would just go directly to 383 to switch his/her status. With this $1000 recommendation fee, it become strike a deal with old hirer to each get $500 but he/she recommends you in. It applies to taxi drivers wanting to switch from Transcab, Prime, Premier and SMRT too; earn $500 for leaving the other taxi companies.
I met a few customers who said jobs getting lesser and lesser out there and they are considering becoming taxi driver. One of them told me his taxi driver friend told him if you could get a regular job that pays $3000 a month, dont become a taxi driver.
If I tell them, I would say it is possible to earn high pay but you must drive long hours. Make a living to feed a family, sure no problem, but dont expect $7000 profit a month.
I never recommended anyone.....but Singaporeans who lost their jobs would really consider this option.
The white collars sure first think of property agent job as it is also white collar, then many would find out also tough industry with more agents than needed (last year 4000 out of 10,000 left the industry). They may also think of Financial Advisor job but would most likely also leave. Some would think of joining renovation industry as sales coordinators but most would also leave. Others would become commission-based sales people but most would leave too.
Finally they would all come to driving taxi like Stanford PhD and other PMETs (some used to earn more than $15k per month). They would have to pass security, pass medical, take course (and pass 3 practical tests), pass 4-module exam to get license and attend few more short courses before can drive. Then many would find driving hours too long or don't earn enough as they started off as OMO thinking they are experienced enough after driving in Singapore for more than 10 years. So some would quit and others would come in.
You cannot stop them from joining as this seems to be the only job reserved for Singaporeans. There is also a round of security clearance by LTA since taxis also need to enter Jurong Island which we all dont want terrorists to attack.
Talking about security, on some days they are very strict. Took thumbprints and photos already last month still must take again when visiting on top of detaining NRIC and requiring all passengers to take thumbprint+show ID.

$7k can lah if you drive OMO 17-18 hours a day for 7 days a week. Sleep 4-5 hours a day.... but medical bill will wipe out all earnings unless he is a pioneer.
Realistically only Yellow-Top taxi drivers could without having to drive too long and can rest on Sunday.
Originally posted by bowah:Singapore is still at full employment mah, most become jobless is due to low pay and of course, the famous foreign invasion led by our voted govt. There are jobs, but most paid peanut against a high cost of living, wages are depressive due to dependency on cheap foreign workforce for too long.
Let take MacDonald, worker in US are pay $17/hr, Sweden $15/hr, British 16/hr, Japan $15/hr, Korea $12/hr…Singapore $4/hr or weekend 5/hrPublic Bus Driver, US pay $5500 per month, Canada pay $5000 per month, British pay 5000 per month, switzerland pay 4500 per month, Japan pay $3500 per month, korean pay $3000 per month Singapore pay 1,800/month.
Cleaners, US mini pay $2500, British $2800, Swiss $3000 (well respected), Japan pay $2600 (also very well respected), korean pay $2,100, Singapore pay..$1000
What is the difference?
Our Fillet-O-Fish and McChicken only S$2. Big-mac more expensive at S$5.10. but at other developed countries, Big-Mac a lot more expensive ( http://www.statista.com/statistics/274326/big-mac-index-global-prices-for-a-big-mac/ ). Bus rides also in Singapore cheaper. Taxi needless to say way cheaper than those countries despite highest cost of car ownership. Clearers special case because they are lowest paid in the industry. But they have no tax to pay, still got CPF and most likely also got bonus and holidays and can rent flat from HDB at 2-digit price. Other countries ones still have to pay tax and social security and the rates are also very high.
Despite the lower salaries, McDonalds still got lots of people willing to work there because near their homes and they hire very young people.

The $2 (US$1.50) fillet and McChicken quite nice lah. Americans cannot deliver at this price because their labour cost higher. Big-Mac there also more expensive but probably slightly large. Bus service cannot be free one lah....who is going to pay for them then?
I had Caucasion taxi customers who said Singapore taxi very cheap and good but they also said beer very expensive.
McDonald's staff pay low because their locations all very good so rental cost very high. But they have a lot of customers when compared to other resturants and food stores.
Singapore is expensive for people that need to drive car and need to buy private housings ( not for locals that buy BTO HDBs ). The ranking that Singapore most expensive city in the world not accurate because they use private housing as benchmark. Even local poorest group can afford public housings (2-rm BTO flat only cost $13000 after subsidies).
Countries like USA if they pay public bus drivers $5500 per month, their bus fare sure very expensive one.
But I agree local pay depressed by cheaper foreign labour. Yet I am not in favour or raising minimum wage for cleaners more from $1000 to be llike other country's because our tax rate is lower and lower income people qualify for low-rental housings. If less-skilled people not happy with the $1000, they can always find another better job (like security guard and sales jobs). Many places also pay cleaners more than the minimum $1000. In Japan, some people live in tentages in the park ( see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVYvh8gzJL8 ) even though their wage level higher. Here in Singapore it is 2-digit rental for whole month for low-income earners and sure can find job unless too old and weak for cleaners job. Got such people (very old people), their job collect cupboards. This is the only group that does not earn enough. But all over Singapore, got Chinese temples offer free meals everyday. So won't not die of hunger.
There are a lot of better-paying jobs in Singapore than McDonalds but dont know why people still like to work at McDonalds. This one maybe because they provide free meals, really very near their homes.or they are part-time students. My cousin ever met an ex-McDonalds manager who willingly left his job to become a taxi-driver. That fellow said he made more driving longer hours as taxi driver than at McDonalds as a manager.
But I think tourists say Singapore is expensive because they only hang around in Orchard road area and not neighood areas.
Like that say why still need to drv taxi?if Taxi drvrs drv more than 18 hrs per day, they will be driving themselves to the grave!
Drive taxi because need to make a living. Pay if measured by regular employee's standard of 44 hours per week (plus got bonus, leaves, holidays and CPF) is low....but if you drive longer hours, it is not too bad . Only thing is quite tiring.
Originally posted by bowah:Lj lah, what is $1000 today? then further divided by 2..$500 each. Mai lah, even I got potiential friends wanted to join, I also told them, for $500, I cannot betray them, go find other job lah
why say 'betray' them? its a win win situation

drive taxi is because we do not have a better deal, otherwise we are better off elsewhere

Got grave also only for 15 years. Higher cost and must do two times (once for grave and once for urn). Also cannot make Feng Shui better as all graves must face same direction unless the grave at the side (that case still can face side direction).
Furthermore if got enemy (or conflict-of-interests people), pour shit on the grave, whole family unlucky (until Heaven produce heavy rain to wash away...but could be longer than that). That is probably why MM LKY also cremated..... too many enemies. Even at CCK got ordinary people's grave got smashed; some a few times.
Urn burial after cremation also got Feng Shui one. Many people pay high prices to get better locations even before they die at Nirvana in CCK. Guang Ming San and other places. But now the price for good locations very high at 5-digit.
Die already spend so much for fark? Burial? Urn? Casket? 3-days void deck?
Just vanish can liao mah. No death cert. CPF cannot touch. IC also can keep. Save and save all the way.
(Some) Chinese believe that if burial location of deceased good then reborn life better and family would get blessings (better career and got wealth luck). If burial location not good then life would not be smooth and maybe would fall sick easily.
But Feng Shui only for those that believe. Some people dont believe it.
I personally have seen Feng Shui affecting 4D results. Many people who did Feng Shui also claimed that their numbers strike 4D after they shifted house after consulting a good Feng Shui master.
If not enough money, then don't buy good urn locations for folks; if got spare money, does not harm to spend money to ensure better life/luck for whole family.
Singapore everyweek got 2 chances (Toto) to become millionaire. So every year got 104+12(Singapore Sweep)=116 millionaires born without having to do a lot of things. If Feng Shui (Yin+Yang) not good one, definitely would not be one of them. If good one, long-term got real chance to become one of them.

This type also got.... he got Pian Cai luck (and most likely good Feng Shui)..... finished money already......so went back to earn honest Zheng Cai money ....
Win money already blanja 朋狗 a little bit would do, no need to spend big money money one mah... Health gone should be tied to drinking....and eating too much....or old age or Destiny.....
At least he already got Pian Cai luck.....a lot of poor people whole life dont even have Pian Cai luck....supposed to win already can retire from taxi driving but many taxi drivings who retired also have problems because too much free time ( http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/cabbies-who-retire-often-feel-grief-and-loss-says-research ) .
Anyway, what you said is a bit like in this movie : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coJNnWwPGII . Still better to have both Pai Cai luck and Zheng Cai luck.
