[CNA] LTA embarks on trial to reduce waiting time for taxis
Technology such as heat sensors and cameras will be deployed at seven taxi stands to aid in better matching taxi supply with demand, according to the Land Transport Authority.
SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority on Wednesday (Nov 5) announced it will embark on a year-long trial for its Taxi Information System (TIS) from today, aimed at reducing waiting time for passengers.
Seven taxi stands were identified for the trial: HarbourFront Centre, Hitachi Towers, Keck Seng Tower, Lucky Plaza, Ngee Ann City, OG People’s Park and VivoCity. They will be fitted out with heat sensors to detect commuters waiting in the taxi queue in real time, and supported by intelligent camera technology that displays footage for taxi drivers and commuters to view the queue status, said LTA.
The average passenger waiting time at the taxi stands will be calculated based on the information collected, and transmitted to the taxi companies' call centres. These call centres can, in turn, broadcast the information to their drivers to encourage unhired taxis to call at taxi stands with high demand, it added.
"With the TIS, taxi drivers can reduce empty cruising while commuters can also look forward to shorter taxi waiting times," LTA stated.
In the initial stage of the trial, the system is configured to alert the taxi companies' call centres automatically when there are 15 or more people in the queue, and when the average waiting time for a taxi is more than 15 minutes. The agency said the algorithm will be calibrated where necessary during the trial.
Commuters can make use of the www.mytransport.sg or MyTransport.SG mobile app to access real-time footage of the taxi passenger queue, which would help them decide if they want to join the queue. The app is only available for Android users currently, and the iOS version will be "available later", according to the press release.
The information on average waiting time at the taxi stands will be available at the end of this year, the LTA added.

Simple solution can solve waiting time issue. Pax just need to booking taxi if dont want to queue. Instead LTA spending so much money on such system for what.

Which TD don't know whether there will be paxs at the mentioned taxi stand at certain time???? And why there's no taxi at the mentioned taxi stand at that "certain time"...
Again, I have to say this... it's not about not enough taxis... just where will the "certain" taxis be at "certain" time is the real issue...

There is always taxi available. It is the question how to best allocate the available taxi for those willing to paying booking fee. The booking system need to do a better jon. For those not willing to pay more, then wait. Another reason why some taxi stand need to wait long is because the location. E.g. mandarin hotel can get pax easily during peak hr why td need to go ngee ann city. Ion is due to $3 cith surcharge. No need to spend money on such stupid system.

I think the system works 2 way lah (if it is meant to be and only for a couple TS)..
Paxs who wait long long at ION or Far East can walk to Lucky Plaza TS for taxi if there's a long queue of taxi there.... But then hor,, tell me which pax (who queue in Far East or ION) don't know that taxi will be available at Lucky Plaza...

Maybe you are right, there is always taxi (not taxis) available.. Are there enough taxi at that time to cater the paxs there?? And why only certain timing there will be long queue of paxs and not all the time??

LTA can solve all the cab availability problems now if they wanted to. Just like anti-vice can clean up all geylang freelancers and massage parlors today if they wanted to.
But then once the problem is solved, they will not be needed anymore. So better put up a wayang and implement a LPPL policy than to lose their jobs right?
