RECENT discussions on Singapore's taxi woes seem to overcomplicate the issue.
The problem is obvious: There are not enough taxis during peak periods (good for cabbies, bad for customers), and far too many outside these periods (bad for cabbies, good for customers).
The solution is clear: Recruit part-time taxi drivers to cater to customers during peak periods, without hurting full-time cabbies outside these periods. Let one of the taxi operators run "grey taxis", whose drivers must be retirees over the age of 65 and who are willing to work only part-time.
To start with, park 2,000 of these cabs at HDB carparks islandwide, and offer them for rental to these retirees at much lower rates compared with those for regular taxis.
The driver can book a grey taxi online, collect it and drive it only from 6.30am to 10am, and 5.30pm to 9pm.
The service would offer part-time work for retirees, avoid competing with full-time cabbies during non-peak hours, and benefit passengers.

Ya lor. Most stupid idea.
1. Daily cost of taxis is at least $80 including depreciation, maintenance, road tax, insurance, HDB parking charges and other overheads. How much lower can the rental get?
2. Such high costs of a taxi and yet use for 7 hrs a day and park for 17 hours is a waste of resources.
3. Many HDB carparks are already full at night. Add another 2,000 cars? How many to allocate at each carpark?
4. Many uncles will surely want to book the grey taxis lah. Not to fetch pax, but to fetch lau char boh to market and grandchildren to and from school. After all, this idiot thinks that daily rental maybe should be $20 only.

If the problem is not enough taxi... 2 k more taxis can help meh?

TDs in Singapore are more worry of other things and never bother the meters unless it cork up, then sent for repairs with down time. Other things include the roads, the paxs, the profit, the benefits, the calls, the grabs, the bookings, the surcharges, the timming, the interviewing, and lastly my favorite, the change shift time

Moreover, if there is a way to slow it down, there will be a way to faster it, sometime, while driving with pax, I knock on the meter, it jumped 22 cts leh..

When I drv for smrt their meter jump faster leh. When I took a pax fr sin Ming Dr he also say so.

Why?? brother brother, even our heartbeat all jump differently, some a bit faster, some a bit slower, and some, no more heartbeat..that is where I can come in. All meters are qualified by the authority, wh can faster or slower, how slow can it be? or how fast can it be that can make you a millionaires?? no lah, in fact, taxi driving earning is more on flag down and surcharges.
