SINGAPORE - An upgraded digital red light camera system has caught 1,175 motorists for beating red lights, barely three months after it was set up.

Since the implementation of the Digital Traffic Red Light Camera System on March 1, 2014, Traffic Police has installed a total of 30 digital red light cameras at various locations island-wide.
To date, 1,175 traffic summonses have been issued from these digital cameras to errant motorists for beating red lights.
The new digital cameras which are operational 24/7 will complement the efforts of officers on the ground and enhance our ability to detect and deter vehicles that run red lights.
By the first half of 2015, there will be about 240 digital red light cameras installed island-wide.
Beating the red light can potentially result in accidents causing injuries, or even the loss of innocent lives. Traffic Police would like to remind all motorists that the penalty for beating a red light is a fine (of $200 for light vehicles and $230 for heavy vehicles) in addition to 12 demerit points. Drivers who beat the red light twice within 24 months will have his/her license suspended.
Traffic Police would also like to advise all road users - drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and even pedestrians - to follow traffic rules at all times. It is everyone's responsibility to look out for one's own safety, as well as the safety of other road users. Motorists and cyclists should always be prepared to slow down and stop when approaching traffic light junctions. Pedestrians must also cultivate the habit of crossing the road only when they have checked and ensured that it is safe to do so. Every Life Matters.
