Just returned to hotel life this week so hang keys already. Pay lower from TD by 500.
Drove for pragmatic reasons.
I kena 2 retrenchments previously bout 25 and 35. Its only when you get this kind of shit you wake up.
So I have my class 4 and drove big vehicles for a while, then I took my tdvl and drove for 2 1/2 years.
At least now if I kena retrenchment again I know how to survive on my own. Later on in life if want slower pace can drive experienced.
Its easy to say, AFTER you kena R, just drive a cab. That is not true. The learning curve is very steep.
Got 2 times I took cab, probe the td how's biz. Both less than 6 months, about to give up. Asked why, both only drive in the north, don't dare go downtown. So no CBD, no booking, prepare for early death in taxi biz.

As the recent news indicated, the next half of 2014 will be a hiring spree for many companies looking for PR and Singaporeans, Singapore govt is going to create a job bank, those who need a job, register with them, by july, the rules will change for employers hiring people, they must hirer PR and locals first, if they cannot get the people, govt will provide the job bank applicant to them, which they must take, otherwise, they will not be given permit to employ foreigners. Therefore, you will see a very tight labour market, and when labour market is tight, employers will be in the loose end, paid will rise, barrier for age will be dismantle. I foreseen many will follow Bro Terry footset in moving out of TD trade, can alway come back as relief or super relief. Whenever I pick up HR or some bosses, they will alway ask me if got people want to work as this or that, if got, here is the name card, please call us...locals only. And I was offered by Gleneagle hospital to be their chief driver.

Bro, you are brave to go back to hotel line. Many TDs after driving get stuck in the job. Agree that the learning curve is steep, especially for those not familiar with the roads. That's why those who get the TDVL should drive part time, at least once a week. Then take opportunity to gain experience, take current and advance bookings, CBD, go queue at airport T1, T2, T3, gardens by the bay, marina cruise centre, Expo etc. Go anywhere pax wants to go. You have the comfort of a full time job to cushion any loss.
If you get retrenched, you are more prepared to become a full time TD. But if kena retrenched during a general economic downturn, everything including TD also tough lah...

I choose not to believe because of our past situation tell us not to believe. But the way of employment is mandatorily, going to change, that will push the employers to further, because it is going to be mandatory, Last time, govt tell employers to employ locals first, prove that you cannot employ, then we allow you permit to employ foreigners, so the employers play around with the interviews and claim that they had advertised, but no singaporean came, and those who came, asked for very high pay. Coming july, govt is saying, if you prove that you cannot get singaporean, I get it for you.

1. The national job bank starts Aug 2014.
2. It is only for EP holders up to a monthly salary of $12,000. It does not apply to WP and S pass holders and those positions paying more than $12,000. In the longer term, perhaps it will open to all work categories.
3. Most TDs educational qualifications belong to the WP and S pass categories, so there will not be a sudden mass exodus of TDs from the profession for now.
4. It is true that employers must advertise in MOM's website for 14 days. But, there is no way the government can arm twist and force employers into accepting Singaporeans if they cannot find one. That is discriminatory and against the fair employment practice that they are advocating.

My bro-in-law, working in stat board for close to 35 years, every year also opt for voluntary retrenchment, every year also unsuccessful leh.....

Best is that for 30s, try to start off with part time TD if time permits... good learning curve and good extra income...
Never thought of that earlier,if not hor.... limpek now easy easy can be a pub owner liao...

last week my frn(44yrs old) went to book td express course
lucky got 3 seats left as for part time course fully booked till May
now express course faster n timing/days v nice compare to last time
8-5 mon-fri total 10days only centre also change location some where around river valley

haha. they conduct so fast, of course they know the failing rate super high, even higher than stocks...at least they (e2i) know most of them will pay and retake. That's the main source of additional income...
unless got those super yao drivers wan to get the licence...but after getting the licence and otr....then they realise...the truth hurts. haha.

Good! there is never a lost in taking one skill more, it just like an extra tool. Many TDs had in a way too long in taxi driving which in a way, had refrained them from joining back the workforce and learn new skill. As such, as time passed, they prefer to stick on to their comfort zone. We can alway step out of TD and be someone, whether we make it or not, we can alway return to taxi driving, what important is that we gain experience and knowledge and at the same time, new skill that can come to good use in future. Just like a tool box, add in on more allen key is good, if needed, it become gold. -
PSA need lots of experience crane operator, but the work is 24hrs, go up to the crane must also bring along yr urine and shit pail, lots of overtime. Crane operator is in demand, and safety is the most important aspect, definitely, with overtimes, the take home $$ and benefits can anytime more than TD.

back your pardon bowah..slight error there..the quay crane operator or yard operator is not 24hrs job...its either 8hrs or 12hrs on 3 or 2 rotating shifts work...they also have container rate incentives. You are right though about doing your own private business while operating the crane and nature calls..not all water drops from above in the PSA terminals are air-con water or rain water...lols. Most of them go behind the crane above and do it. The tower crane in the construction sites...what I heard is almost a 24hrs job. -

STA now shifted to Kim Yan road liao..Queue so long arh? Either because COE so high, many ppl want to use taxi as private vehicle or the perception of TD is changing...Crane operators (tower cranes/crawler cranes) can earn $3k to $5k every month easy easy. Good months, some can hit $7K or more. Average age of crane operators now around 55+.
As long as the gahmen don't substitute blue collar work with cheap FT, you will see the salary increasing for these people, more than many white collar work.

True, it operate 24hrs on rotating shift, but weekend is all overtime, and if your buddy take left or sick, overtime all the way. The most is 72 hrs OT not including weekend OT -

You are talking about tower crane at the construction sites right? PSA is very strict about crane operators working hours. -
