Jailed for attacking cabby over $20 fare
A 31-YEAR-OLD commodities broker who kicked and punched a cabby over $20 in fares was jailed for two weeks yesterday.
Briton Elliott Raymond Pitcher was also ordered to pay $5,000 in compensation to Mr Gui Hwee Meng, 59.
Pitcher, who had been drinking before boarding the cab in the early hours of Sept 12 last year, had argued with Mr Gui over the route to his home in Gilstead Road.
When the cabby almost missed a turn, he hit him on the head. Later, he attacked Mr Gui after a dispute over how to settle the fare, kicking the cabby in the face and abdomen and continuing to punch and kick him after he had fallen to his knees.
District Judge Siva Shanmugam, when handing down the punishment, said taxi drivers provide an "essential public service" and had "every right" to work in a safe environment.
He took into consideration Pitcher's offer of compensation, which had been paid, and his guilty plea. Also, it was the Briton's first brush with the law.
His lawyer Suresh Damodara pleaded for leniency, saying Pitcher had acted "out of character". He also said his client had suffered injuries, including a broken nose, when Mr Gui tried to defend himself.
But Assistant Public Prosecutor Andrew Low pointed out that Pitcher had been the "architect" of his own injuries. He also said jail terms for similar cases typically ranged from four to six weeks.
Pitcher could have been jailed for a maximum of two years and fined $5,000 for voluntarily causing hurt to the cabby.

Of course after wining the case, the cabby can seek civil laws to sues him further for other damages, he needs to consult a private lawyer for advices. In the west, the victim can claim millions for such act, in singapore, knnccb, only $5k?? nabey, follow ang mo laws but never follow their payout.

Truth!! Thats too short term for a strong man doing such act to a driver.that was a tendency of death at stake for a kick in the face. He should be banned in sg for few years with few mths of jailterm n canning..truth lah...

i pick one pax. he bring this up and say its actually mostly driver fault. if driver is professional then all these can avoid. he suggest drivers must undergo customer survey, let the pax judge his attitude and not the court. the court will always side locals mah..lucky the trip short short i diam diam drop and collect and go..

In order to protect taxi driver, I think the authorities should allow taxi drivers to install camera which record the inside of the taxi. Just like the buses have installed one.
It helps to
1)catch Fare cheaters,
2) imagine when a female passenger just suddenly shouted that you molest her when you did not. But how to prove that you really didn't? Not forgetting that the law protects woman. usually, in car camera allowed by our authority, only record the outside of the front windscreen and record voices within the taxi. If we are allowed to record what happened inside the taxi will clear all misunderstanding.
3) when a passenger knows that they are on camera, they will watch what they say and watch their action and behavior like nose digging, scolding vulgar words etc.... And most of all, chances of them trying to rob a cabbie will be minimized as they know that their face is being recorded.

Cannot lah, taxi derive from a word in French, taxi meaning, high taxation with privacy. tho we are categorised under public transport, but we are a different kind from many other kinds, bus and mrt of course can do it, because is it not taxing and many peoples, and if we are to be with them, then we can go into bus lane liao. As a pax, I pay a higher cost to get from pts A to B, as such, I expect comfort, relax and privacy, which is much better than other public transport. And now you are telling me you are going to put a cam direct on me,..sorry, I will not accept it.

I guess thats not the only case created by such people..there should be more but sg taxi drivers are real kind and tolerance and heros.when such people cnt get a taxi, to go home fxxx , lai liao.unlucky one will kena..sometimes bettter spend less then seeing troubles.if I ready 5k want free rice can I huntam taxi driver also?
