The $3 city surcharge, or lack thereof, seems to be one reason why commuters on the fringes of Orchard Road have to wait a long time for cabs.
Going by The Straits Times' recent investigation, those at Far East Plaza wait as long as 40 minutes for a cab on a Friday night.
Taxi drivers seem to avoid heading to the Scotts Road mall as it is just outside the Orchard cordon, which means they do not get the surcharge.
But commuters who wait in Orchard Road, where cabbies can charge the extra $3, take around 10 minutes to get a taxi.
Seven in 10 cabbies that The Straits Times spoke to said the surcharge is why they preferred waiting for passengers in the main Orchard belt.
"If you can get an extra $3 at those places, why would you wait at the malls without it?" said cabby Tay Kim Fatt, 50.
The city surcharge starts from various Electronic Road Pricing gantries around Orchard, including one before Lucky Plaza and another behind Wisma Atria. It applies from 5pm to midnight daily.
Another cabby, Mr Lau Joo Meng, said passengers waiting outside the Orchard cordon should just call a cab. For example, it costs $3.30 to call a Comfort cab during peak hours, which include 6pm to midnight daily.

this issue look very funny leh, it is not new, once a pax I pick up at far east told me she waited for 30 minutes for a cab like me to come in, she went shopping at ION then tang, so I told her, why not you wait at lucky plaza or wisma? then she said, there more people, pinoys and rubbish peoples...limpeh tia liao seibei tulang, sarcastically told her, wha! you walk all the way to far east, you mean far east paxs are better? She felt the critics and suddenly remain quiet, knnccb, limpeh $30 net per day, and on the way drop pax then come and pick you, if not, pull out liao, even hyatt or mariott bellboys wave also no entertain one.

Therefore in a nutshell, it is a hide and seek game, pax want cheap fare, taxi want surcharge, it is not about no taxi, I not going to say who is right or wrong, both can be right, pax wants to save, taxi driver wants to earn, it is a zero sum game. Therefore, the blaming cutlure here should not only prevail on cabbies, pax hv to truly ask themselves, but of course there are geninue cases of peoples like tourist or shopper who really dunno the differences will find no taxis outside cbd.

Board cab liao. Si lang hubby hao lian tell wife:" see, told u here easier to wait for cab....those at taka ones dunno wait how long"
I was like......$&@;%#}%.....smlj.....i see ur wife like milf then i dun mind less $3. Knn. U yaya papaya.... Next time let those ppl at fringe rot lah.....
Either pay $3 in cbd or wait until we clear all the $3 pax...

Some places no enuf cab.....places with surcharge, bo lang still green lanterns queueing.....
Cheapo pax who walk out of cbd go take cab shld rot.....wait till lim peh song then pick.
Those who suffer are tourists who dunno the rules of games or ppl who truly needed cab outside.....

By right, hotels like marriot and hyatt is mend of guest Q, so these cheapo pples, act like tourist go into hyatt toilet one round come out and act like guest of the hotel, so those bellboys scare poor service quickly go call cab, then you think...50% chance go AP, but knnccb, kenna bukit merah..if woodland,,,lagi phuiXXX. Also ang mo like to Q at hotel, ang mo mah, live local also act like tourist

CBD SC introduced to ensure there's taxi in town when demand is high, but seems problem 1/2 solved.
cheapo pax wants to save, why not, just go join the rest, with the slow moving q, no booking, unless is pick and drop, no cab will go in fetch pax
I feel SC needs some fine tuning, else the immediate fringes sure suffer.
though plenty of cabs available right after 2000hrs, with not so much pax, TD, still willing to wait to secure that extra $3 with their pax.

Want to blame, go blame the policy makers lah. Knn, why blame the TD who is just following the policy. Anything wrong? It's not their fault.
Like that, might as well blame the TD who takes calls instead of sweeping the road for pax or who queue at the Airport instead of queuing at TMFT. WTF!
