That morning began just like any other day for Mr Ng, 46, since he started driving a taxi four years ago.
He had picked up a passenger in Bedok who wanted to go to Tuas West Drive.
"He got on and just played with his mobile phone, like many passengers do these days," Mr Ng told The New Paper in Mandarin from his hospital bed, his voice barely above a whisper.
They were on the lane closest to the road divider on the AYE and approaching the Tuas West exit just before 9am when Mr Ng saw a tipper truck on the extreme left lane filtering to the middle lane.
The incident stood out because the driver had switched lanes suddenly.
Without dwelling on it, Mr Ng continued on his way.
Then, the accident happened. Mr Ng said: "I just heard a loud sound and I felt something heavy hit my taxi.
The next thing I knew, I was pinned head down against the steering wheel.
"I saw a white light and I blacked out for a bit. I thought I was going to die."
The truck had toppled onto his taxi and crushed the roof.
Mr Ng's seat was bent forward, trapping him in a crouching position.
Subsequent events were a haze as he was drifting in and out of consciousness.
What he does remember is that after the debris was scraped from his window, he could use his right elbow to push through the cracked glass to get air.
More than a week after the accident, the cuts on his arms, with visibly more on his right side, are still healing.
He still has bruises on his forearms.
He said: "I could hear a lot of voices talking outside and a lot of noise. Someone helped to hold my head up.

The Honda Fit taxi right? KNN in the first place it should not be used as taxi. So small and under power. Really short charged pax for the ride. And not comfortable also. Lousy suspension. I had one before I know. Prime just use the taxi company to clear out their car that cannot sell. SMLJ model also have.
LTA says ok, what to do
Its almost like a live burial
what happened to the pax then? they never say?
