I CANNOT think of any other country that imposes different taxi flagdown rates based on the brand and model of the vehicle used ("Higher flagdown rates for new taxis"; last Tuesday).
It is difficult enough for locals to keep track of the rates; one can only imagine how confusing and tiresome it must be for tourists, who cannot be faulted for thinking that taxi drivers are trying to cheat them.
We now have a laughable situation where commuters reject certain taxis because of their higher flagdown rates.
Buses and trains do not have differing fares based on whether they are newer or more energy efficient, so why should this be allowed for taxis?
The argument that taxi companies are private entities entitled to determine their own flagdown rates is flimsy as bus and train operators are also private companies.
The authorities here must step in to regulate such arbitrary fare policies and disallow pricing based on the make of the vehicle.
