Higher fares but no gain for cabbies
AS A TransCab driver, I want to clarify that the higher taxi fares do not give drivers extra gains ("Higher flagdown rates for new taxis"; last Tuesday).
This is because from Nov 1, daily rentals will go up from $114 to $120. With the extra 20 cents per flagdown, we will have to pick up at least 30 trips a day to cover the rental increase. My average for a 12-hour shift is about just 25 trips. This means I will have to cough up more for rental.
In my 12 years as a taxi driver, I have not encountered an increase in daily rentals for a 1 1/2-year-old car, which has a lower certificate of entitlement premium. Is this fair business practice?

PTC only regulates bus and train fares now. Taxi fares have been deregulated since 1998. Taxi Operators are free to set their own fares. Consequent to this was the liberalisation of the taxi industry in 2002 to allow more taxi operators.
The taxi companies can set $10 flag down fare and meter jump $1 every 400m if they like. Of course, no pax will take their taxi and in turn, they will have no drivers renting the taxi from them..at least, in theory only.
high fare sure got pax one
high rental sure got hirer one
The problem is this is a job and ricebowl and necessary means of transport for many.
Not a product. It is not a mobile phone or a laptop or a meal at a restaurant.

Like bowah had said on our Goberment way of doing "business", u believe PTC clean their hand off on taxi?....
Only taxi drivers like us will gong gong trying to defend ourself, when rules and regulation not even set by us.....
In hokkien term, we call this "tua pek gong".....
Let's say your meter start up is $3.90, just collect la, pax ask or question, print receipt and tell him to go ask company la, why go and block the bullet?.....
That bullet suppose to be aiming at the authority 1 hor......
PTC is still under LTA, so..what you think? when LTA call for operators meeting, PTC is the co chair, companies must submit relevant reasoning and state their fare increases, PTC tho hv no control over is submission, but on consensus, they can object it, however LTA will hv the final said, and once LTA gives the green light, companies must declare in their web, news and other media to inform the public of the changes..the key word here is PUBLIC not PUBIC hair hor.
And what is the reason for fare increases?? COE lor, and who control the quotas of COE?? LTA lor. So you see the merry go round picture?? Other than that it is more like you rub my back, I rub your back at the sauna, let those CB taxi drivers and paxs go and fight it out.
