BERLIN (Reuters) - A cat has saved several people's lives by alerting them to a fire in a German apartment block before dying in the flames, according to police.
The cat's miaowing woke up her owner, a 42-year-old woman, who promptly noticed smoke coming from a room in her apartment in the western city of Essen. She called the fire brigade and alerted the other families in the building.
"The cat definitely saved a number of lives," a police spokesman said on Monday. "Some of the residents managed to flee the fire, others were brought to safety with ladders."
Two people, including the cat's owner, needed hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
The cat was not named.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A cat saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned on the doorstep of a Cologne house in the middle of the night by meowing loudly until someone woke up, a police spokesman said on Saturday.
"The cat is a hero," Cologne police spokesman Uwe Beier said. "Its loud meowing got the attention of the homeowner and saved the baby from suffering life-threatening hypothermia. [...]
maybe the cat was trying just trying to escape the flames but couldn't ? ...
One day I decided to change a rubber washer of a leaking tap in the kitchenÂ’s toilet. I didnÂ’t have the tool to close the main valve outside the flat. So, I close the toilet door and removed the tap.
The pressure caused the water gushing out the pipe when the washer was removed. My cat started to meowed loudly outside the toilet and attracted my motherÂ’s attention. She rushed to the kitchen to investigate and was amazed at the catÂ’s instinct. It thought that I was was in trouble because of the noise of water gushing out the pipe.
By then the toilet was flooded and I was soaking wet. It took me a full five minutes to get the job done. When I finally open the door and emerged from the toilet, the cat stopped meowing.
Cats do have natural instinct to warn people of trouble.
When my cat died of old age and cancer, I sobbed like a little girl( and I am all man, having faced deadly typhoons before without fear).
