this one came up on the FB feed ....
Originally posted by Fatum:This goverment submitted it's report card in the last elections, and the people has graded them and signed them off. The majority passed them, though there were dissenters, and they have noted areas of particular concern and has taken the first steps towards addressing them, first by retiring what the people formerly thought to be sacred cows from senior positions in the goverment and other public institutions.
The next performance review is due in 2016, do you not think it's fair to give them time to walk the talk ? especially when the new parliament has not even convened yet ? ... or is it a case of dammed if they do, dammed if they don't ?
I say, hold the cynicism, and see what happens in the coming months, for I believe this is only the first step in a serious of changes ... the rumblings is already in the air ... now that many senior sacred cows are gone, I think we'll see some policy sacred cows slaughtered soon, as well.
let's see coz frankly, a lot of people were pissed off, and a lot of them actually believed that bullshit about "HDB prices"
now let's see what happens...
because a healthy gabrament is not one where a party gets to rubberstamp everything.. which is what the MIW have been doing since they came into power so many decades ago... the rot has set in and they are frantically cutting out the deadwood...
may not be enough... what if they find that most of their people are deadwood?
goodness knows their own "success" caused it..

but in a parliamentary democracy like ours, that's exactly what's supposed to happen. One party gets voted in, with enough seats that they can pass laws and policies and get things done without obstruction and politiking till the people think they are no longer worthy and toss them out and exchange this group for another at the next "performance review" ...
I agree with you, there are certain entrenched mindsets among the older parliamentarians that can come across as haughty or aloof. Infact, i tell you, despite my personal political affliation, I'm not completely happy with everyone on the team either ... one good example is the chap whose portfolio vivian just took over. I also agree with you that certain things could have been done better, they are certainly not perfect. But I think it's important to put things in perspective, we may rail at how crowded the trains and buses are during peak hours, but let's not forget that we do have an extensive train system in place, and all our buses are airconditioned, something more than what all of our neighbours in asean can boast of. And the first steps are being taken already too, as bussy reported yesterday .... more trains are being added to the system. waiting times are expected to get shorter. And this before the new parliament was convened, and raymond lim got replaced. So I think it's quite unfair to scream out "tuck yew ! tuck yew !" just yet, and this is just one example.
But there's the big picture ... We are not north korea, or even china .... people don't disappear in the middle of the night, there are no mass graves, no gulags. we don't really live in fear of the powers-that-be, despite what SDP would have you believe, we have done remarkably well on the whole, and if anyone's unhappy about something, they can rail about it online with impunity, like now ...
i think we all owe it to ourselves to give them a chance, regardless, after all, their next performance review is in 5 years time. The new batch are quite different. Check out this new chap, tan chuan jin ... many people wrote him off as another scholar-baby general foisted upon the people .... but he's different ... don't take my word for it .... check out his facebook page ....

go past all the congrats and well wishes and see how he responds to complaints, gripes, and even to poh ah pak like trollers .... and the kind of comments he writes .....
He is now the minister of state for MND, which covers the HDB .... send him a private message, even if it's a gripe or a concern about HDB prices, and you'll see he'll send more than a non-stock reply back. If chaps like this one represents the new generation of the PAP, I'd say, we should be in good hands ...

Any idea what LKY is going to do after leaving the Cabinet? Will he retire gracefully or continue to meddle in local politics?
