I just read ST, some parent wrote in saying tuition is absolutely necessary. Why? Because without tuition, daughter was last in class. With tuition, voila! became first in class.
Proceeds then to blame the education system for "being unable to deliver".

I found it hilarious also when she said it was also because she didnt purchase ten-years series that the daughter flunked the P5 exams.

Why parents are forced to spend on tuition
MY THREE older children are in Primary 6, Primary 4 and Primary 2 in a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school. Having put them in such a well sought-after school, I thought they would be in good hands.
All three of them were getting average grades. However, to my utter shock and dismay, my eldest came home with red marks for her Primary 5 exams - she was the last in class. Her concerned form teacher told me she was attentive in class and was, in fact, chosen as the role model student for that year.
The teacher was surprised she had no tuition and that I did not tutor her myself. She was even more surprised that I had not bought any 10-year series or guidebooks for her. Due to time constraints, teachers usually had time to cover only the basics, so the child needed to do extra work at home or get tuition, she said.
That seems to be the reality, as I have found out from parents of children in other schools. Subsequently, I enrolled her for tuition for all four subjects and, for her mid-year exam, she achieved the first position in her class. I can now understand why the majority of parents are ready to spend so much money on tuition. The system is just not delivering.
Tuition centres are able to produce many students with As. Why is that so? The class size is about 10. The tutors are motivated to get the students to do well, either through bonuses or other means. More than that, they are not bogged down with many other responsibilities that distract them from teaching. Many good tutors I spoke to are former teachers.
If we could give our teachers a good environment, and not burden them with umpteen other responsibilities, they would have more energy and time left to prepare well for lessons.
Parents are focusing all their energies on academic achievement, thereby neglecting more important matters like character building and family bonding, which are so crucial in today's fast-paced world. It may be a good idea to set up a forum with parents, students, teachers, tutors and the Ministry of Education to analyse the situation. Singapore has a world-class education system. Perhaps, that is in part due to a world-class tuition system.

Anyway one of my collick is leaving soon le... had a small mini gathering with her... come to think of it, I didn't talk to her much also... I only remember playing 5-10 and dices and drinking with her in the morning during our team bonding session

Actually, I agree with the last part.
The parent's logic is so convoluted that it proves that the education system has failed her.
Being a tutor myself, I can say this much - tuition can make a difference, but only if the student has the right kind of mentality. If the kid is really dense and couldn't be bothered to learn, then even Stephen Hawking cannot do anything to help the kid.
I resigned from one tuition job precisely because the kid kept playing the fool while I was trying to teach him. His mom offered to cut my hours + raise my pay 1.5x to get me to stay.
I demanded 3x pay before I would even consider teaching that brat. She shut up, and I never heard from her again.

I was checking my IPT record on ns.sg.... By right, I had already completed all eight sessions including the actual IPPT.
But then, my IPT record only showed seven sessions. So I called the NS hotline to ask them what the hell happened to my 8th session record.
The fella told me that it takes the system FIVE days after the official IPT end date to update their records.
Kaoz. They are really that inefficient ah?

i thought it was damned efficient already..this is the SAF you're talking about... it's a miracle they managed to keep actual records!

I was taking my IPPT in my active days.... I managed to get silver. I was so proud of my achievement.
Then came the bombshell: my stupid S1 branch misplaced the IPPT records.
As a result, I had to take a retest.... but the retest was during the fasting month. I barely managed to pass, for obvious reasons.
Since then, I've had nothing but utter contempt for my S1 branch.....
