Basket, my hopes were so damn high when Straits Times said (I quote):
NATIONAL Servicemen stand to get $9,000 each in a move to show that citizens come first amidst resentment towards foreigners who do not have to serve NS.
Then when I read it would go into CPF, I thought okaylah, 9k in CPF at one go also jadilah.
Now I'm being told that I'm getting 6k only, and even then, the last 3k is only when I'm middle-aged, balding, and with a Michelin tyre around my waist.
*flips table*
well mate, remember what you said yesterday about the chaps who were complaining about this 9k thing in SC? ......

given the amount of control the government holds over the local media, I don't blame them for being misleading. reporters have been removed for telling the truth.
remember the one that pissed off LKY years ago?
tea time!
I'm cold and hungry... gotta go get some snacks...

Yes, I do.
Okay, 6k in my CPF account is still better than nothing.
But I was misled into thinking that they were gonna pump a full 9k into my CPF with immediate effect. Nabeh.

well mate, I say hold your horses lah ....
the details are not really ironed out yet ....
I suspect it's something small lee only just tossed to his underlings to iron out ....

i wish your office was nearer and i could ask you to get some for me
I just realized that things doesn't compute .......
commandos serve only 6 to 8 cycles, depending on whether they are lrrp or strike .....
divers serve 6 cycles only too I think ....
and I don't think they'll fark this group over ....
so yeah .... things are certainly not finalized yet .... .

Originally posted by Fatum:well thing is, NS doesn't stop after 2.5 years for a large group of people, reservist is part of national service commitment too mate.
Just as we don't have a choice whether to serve or not, the people who have combat reservist duties, have to keep fit and pass IPPT every year, are sacrificing more than those who just serve their full time service and fark off, eh ?
If you can think that men who've served at all should get more benifits than men, (and women), who didn't, why wouldn't you think it's fair for those whose NS commitment goes on for at least another decade beyond ORD ? Yes, 2.5 years is a big sacrifice .... but there are chaps who have to make even BIGGER sacrifices ON TOP of their own 2.5 years too, eh.
As for reservist, you can always call up ns.sg and badger them ..... I did.
I'm not saying don't give anything to the reservist portion. I'm saying that if 3K is all for the 2.5/ 2 years and the reservist period is 2 times the compensation at 6 k, something is very wrong.
Not sure about your perspective, but I see the 2.5 years of solid service as a bigger sacrifice than the reservist stint.
Actually I also don't agree that "commanders" should get more but that's another problem.
yeah..most of us here except keii won't get the first payout..ccb.. and whats a post secondary education account anyway, isn't that another term for edusave??
and the 2nd and 3rd milestone, must serve reservist to get, but at least its 3500 for 3sg and above.. problem is, i have never heard of the airforce calling back people to finish their cycles in my vocation..
in short, i could end up with nothing also..
no milestone but a tombstone that might cost even more then 9k..

actually, imagine if you had just finished your 6th cycle, that means you will only be eligible for the 3rd tier..and if somehow they stop called you back at the 9th cycle, you'll end up with nothing..

with that i dunno if fudge feels like stabbing you or the person who proposed that idea

well, but you agree that people who have to bear reservist duties should get more eh .....
I'm not really sure if I agree that "commanders" should get more either ... but then again, OCS or sispec is no cake walk either. Their reservist cycles and ICT lengths are also longer, typically by 2-3 days at least. It's not all honour and glory you know.
I suppose if we want to differentiate to such an extent then it would be quite fair for combat side chaps and service side chaps to get different rates too. True, everyone serves the same length of time, but a chap who sits in an aircon orpid from 8-5, goes home everyday, and could go for night classes to upgrade himself spends his 2 years very differently from a chap in the infantry, say, who spends his weekdays running around in the jungle and sleeping in the mud and rain and burning multiple weekends pulling guard and going through live fire exercises. And if you factor in the fact that the former just serves his time, and burns his uniform and leaves the military behind forever, while the latter is looking at annual IPPTs, RTs and ICTs for at least 10 years ........
But hey, life's not fair, you can't draw lines everywhere ...
officers getting more yes, becuase their reservist cycle is longer..specialists i dont know..
but hey im a service spec, so im not complaining bout the increment, only thing is whether i actually get the money in da first place...hai..
but the first tier is effing bullshit..3k into a PSEA account and only for ppl ording around this period and after..

well mate ..... you can always join the PDF ..... they'll take anyone, cook, clerk, drivers, technicians, "information systems specialists", MPs, artillerymen whose guns were phased out .....
but, like I said, things doesn't compute at the moment .....
I don't think they've worked everything out yet ...
they also serve
those who stand in reserve...
but i got a feeling i may end up being lost coz my unit cancelled a few ICTs due to not being able to muster enough manpower to make it count as an ICT
Actually fudge is lucky, imagine if his 5th ICT was before this news was announced, then he'll really be cursing and swearing..

but tbh, its really a slap in the face to people like bear who due to circumstances beyond his control will not receive anything despite almost serving it all the way..
and yeah i also belong to the artilleryman whose guns were phrased out in about 3 years.. when the F5's get phased out..ill be nowhere again..

that's why I said, I don't think they've finalized and worked out everything yet .....
imagine a lrrp trooper who serves only 8 cycles, and misses out on the last two ....
or chaps who finished 13 full cycles .....
but then, such things also a bit LL sometimes ..... NS was shortened to two years almost right after I ORD'ed ..... can you say song boh ? ....

no leh, they never mentioned 10 cycles..for the 3rd tier they just mentioned completion of your ORNS cycle..So which i will assume means to say that once Mindef recognize you as a Mr. plus the free watch, you will be eligible for it already..

i wonder if they'll actually give me a watch, considering i've missed so many ICTs, and only one of them was because i was on the medical board after destroying my back during one of the IPPTs
what kinda watch do they hand out?

I'll say maybe there can be some extra incentive for reservist but it definitely shouldn't be more than the ns portion.
The OCS and sispec and such might be tougher, but the length of time wasted is the same. And hey, at least they get to exercise some leadership and people management skills that might be useful for later + they already earn more in ns.
I think the main thrust for this "compensation" is for the opportunities lost and time wasted, not the efforts put in. If you want to compensate for effort, do it at the allowance end where you can differentiate based on vocation, rank, and such.
