CASTING CALL FOR SPRING SUITCASE - A GRADUATING SHORT FILM
THE PUTTNAM SCHOOL OF FILM, LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
PREMISE
Spring Suitcase sees a guilt-ridden, widowed father return home for the first time in five years. He is back to visit his two single, grown-up children, and to pay his respects to his late wife on the fifth anniversary of her death. His son and daughter had stayed on in the old family home after their mother's death, while their father had left abruptly - unannounced - to northern Malaysia to lead a solitary life. Five years on, he is back to reconcile with his kin, as well as to seek their support for his re-marriage, to a divorcee he met in Malaysia.
Even as their family home stands unchanged, time has festered the unspoken emotions within each of the three. The film explores the fragile and repressed emotions of a family as they seek to understand, move on and forgive with the passage of time.
ROLES
1. TONG (Father)
Gender:
Male
Age: Looks 60s
Language: English and Mandarin
A silent, passive man who eschews the stereotypical sturdy father figure, Tong remains conservative and is nonetheless fairly distant from his two children. His late wife had always been the stronger personality, and he had leant on her a lot. His youth was spent in a rural village in Northern Malaysia, and he has always remained a kampung boy at heart. Whilst back in Malaysia after his wife's passing, Tong finds new romance with a divorcee and her young son.
2. WEICHENG (Son)
Gender:
Male
Age: Looks late 20s / early 30s
Language: English and Mandarin
At the cusp of thirty, Weicheng finds himself in a rudderless phase, unsure of his goals and desires, even as the rest of his peers press on with their lives. His mother, whom he was close to, is now gone; his father, vanished. Close to his sister as children, they have drifted slightly apart as life takes over. But he has little time to burden himself with thoughts of family - caught up with his own issues in his personal life and career, Weicheng solitarily presses on. His individual life continues, and he has problems enough to keep him dwelling on the past.
3. XILIN (Daughter)
Gender:
Female
Age: Looks late 20s / early 30s
Language: English and Mandarin
Xilin has always been the mediator in the family, now even more so with her mother gone. More soft-hearted and sensitive than her younger brother, she has silently suffered the lost of both parental figures, leaving her intensely lonely. Her need for emotional support has led her to take desperate solace in religion, and in romance, but at a considerable cost to her - something she keeps secret.
