Personally I felt that the movie was a little draggy in some parts but what those scenes did was to flesh out subtle points on why each character behaves in the way the behave in the present (in the context of the movie).
I think people who are critical of the movie are so because it is, sometimes, hard for people to accept that superheroes could be amoral and kill people without batting an eyelid. They are far from the great protectors that we are led to believe since young.
To me, this phrase from another movie sort of sums up the ending. "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian."

the movie is great until the ending part where suddenly the world peace came right after the city was destroyed. I get the idea but it seems too easy. Rorschach is the best character, everyone loves a psychopath
