Scarlett Johansson, Allen's leading lady of choice since Match Point, plays Cristina, a failed filmmaker who travels to Spain with her friend Vicky (Rebecca Hall) to have fun and find romance.
Vicky, a pragmatist who has a fiancée named Doug (Chris Messina) waiting for her back in the States, is predictably unimpressed when a painter named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) approaches them and solicits both for a fling. But after Cristina suffers from food poisoning, leaving her bedridden, Vicky succumbs to Juan Antonio's charms, prompting her to question whether her life of comfort and safety is truly the one for her.
Meanwhile, upon recovering Cristina also becomes involved with Juan Antonio, but the return of his fiery ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz) into his life (not to mention his home) challenges even her liberal notions of what constitutes a stable, healthy relationship.
Gosh, Scarlett Johansson
