Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was slated to have been released end of next month. Then came the relatively strong opening in the West late last year, followed by nominations and wins in the Golden Globes, that it has now been bumped up for release this week, prior to the 3-way fight that the Asian movies will put up in the upcoming Lunar New Year week. I thought it was a no-brainer having to release this early as Johnny Depp is already a household name here thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and here he dons eye shadow and retains the bad teeth to play the titular character. Johnny Depp plays a barber framed by this judge (Alan Rickman) who lusts after his wife. 15 years later, he returns and plots his revenge while putting up at a pie maker's factory. Mini subplot includes the romance and rescue of his teenage daughter who sings and sews by some window.
Predictable misfortune, mayhem and murder ensues.
Not my cup of tea, I think Tim Burton needs some time off to work his magic again. Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish were his best works, really liked Beetlejuice too. Sweeney Todd is just 2 hours worth of unbearable singing and ketchup overdose. Not funny and not scary but the sets were quite pretty.
He had a great cast though but the story and direction wasn't enough to bring out the best in Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman. Maybe the production/costume design or art direction departments are up against those in Elizabeth: Golden Age for the Oscars.
