Casablanca was made in 1942 (American).. star crossed lovers set in a war.. "here's looking at you kid" perhaps the most heartbreaking scene ever..
Metropolis (the silent movie - German) was made in 1927... perhaps the most technologically advanced movie then, showing the horrors of a world where people become automatrons serving the elite.. way ahead of its time and still inspires until today..
Pulp Fiction (1994 - American) is the Tarantino movie which rocked Hollywood and was sold out losing the Oscar to the insipid Forrest Gump.. showed what making a movie and telling a story can be.. and the sheer exhilaration and pace of the movie left people breathless..
Nosferatu the Vampyr (the silent movie - German) made in 1922 was the first ever vampire movie based on Bram Stoker's tale..
Reservior Dogs (1992 - American) is the first Tarantino movie which shows where he got his inspiration from.. Hong Kong movie City on Fire...
Savage Nights (1992 - French) a sad but beautiful story of a promiscuious bisexual man who finds love with a fiercely passionate woman.. and how his HIV-positive status, his sexuality and everything explodes in his drive to live life to the fullest.. loosely autobiographical, the film director died a few days before the movie won the highest award in France
Clerks (1994 - American) is a hilarious movie about a couple of store clerks.. the reality of the movie is balanced with the unreal but plausible things that happen in the store.. a movie with no nudity, violence, sex and blood garnered an R rating for the content
The Godfather 1 & 2 (1972 & 1974 - American) is a tour de force of amazing acting by Brando, De Niro, Pacino and Duvall.. enough has been said about this movie...
Lost in Translation (2003 - American/Japanese) is probably one of the most maligned movies ever.. a script which no one else but Bill Murray can pull off.. a story of being out of synch in a land which is not your own, meeting another who feels the same way, the bond, the unspoken friendship which will develop between people who will probably never even look at each other when in their own homeland.. and somehow, in that land, everything seems.. lost in translation.. with only each other understanding each other.. the husband of Charlotte being preoccupied with work and leaving her alone, and Bob all alone in a strange place away from his family which he barely feels for..
The Seven Samurai (1954 - Japanese) was one of Kurasawa's best.. remade into The Magnificant Seven (a cowboy movie) which is so engrossing you do not notice that it is over 3 hours long...
