  according to the writers, in christianity, the deceased are known as "the faithful departed". since this movie is about faithfulness, they decided to name it as "the departed".
  
  secondly, it can also means that the 2 main character departs from the world they wanted to live into another.

  Watch it today. It will be the same story as Infernal Affairs. But in Ang Mo version. I still prefer Wu Jian Dao.
