Foreign Films you would recommend to me.

No decent forum about movies should be without a thread on foreign films. So as above, what foreign films would you recommend to me?
For the purporses of this thread, a film is 'foreign' if it is not made, either solely or jointly, in Singapore, USA, Uk, China and/or Hong Kong. The language of the film is irrelevent for the purposes of defining a foreign film.
I'll start:
Hable con ella (Talk to Her) - 2002
Open Your Eyes [remade as Vanilla Sky in 2000ish]- 1997
Trio Couleurs Blanc (Three Colors White) - 1994 -> Now, i haven't watched the others in the trilogy. Although this is supposed to be the weakest of the three, i enjoyed it nontheless. Not great but good.
Cinema Paradiso - 1998 (normal and/or Director's Cut)
Jean De Florette - 1986
Manon Des Sources - 1986 -> the Sequel to Jean de Florette. I preferred the first, but the second's great as well. -
the Three Colours trilogy is GREAT...
Blue was about Liberty.. where a woman, widowed and also loses her daughter in a car crash, finds that her husband has had an affair and that the woman was pregnant.. where she has nothing left, the other woman has something of his... this leads her to learn how to be free of her past, her anger, her loss...
White was about Equality... where the woman who used a man for her purposes gets her retribution in that the man plots revenge.. but in a strange twist, they end up being really in love.. she's in gaol, and he's outside, both equally lost as they are separated from each other...
Red was about Fraternity... where a model ends up friends with a retired judge through a strange relationship where there's eavesdropping and they find something which they had to stop together...
together Blue, White and Red are the colours of the French Flag.. and each colour representing the reason for the French Flag
very recommended!
i would also recommend (if you can get it) Savage Nights, about a bisexual man, HIV positive, and his strange relationships, and his trying to live his remaining life to the fullest... disturbing, yet compelling...
and Like Water for Chocolate.. a strange story about a family told in the view of the youngest child in the family, of family struggles, politics, forbidden love and tragedy... -
Unfortunately, the other titles in the trilogy were on loan when i borrowed white. I have already placed holds on them but i will probably have to wait for a week before they are returned.
Also, I cannot find savage nights at my uni library, and Like Water and Choc is only avail in VHS in my Uni Library.
Since I do not have a VHS player, and Blockbuster will probably not have those titles, it would appear it will be a while yet before i can enjoy them.

Look up the list of nominations for the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards for the past ten years -- that's a good place to start. As long as the rating of the movie could make it past the library board, that is.
That's what got me started in the first place. Good hunting. -
