From the poster babe with thick eyebrows to a powerhouse of an actress, Jennifer Connelly delivers a performance as good as Kuroki Hitome in the original Japanese movie. And the little child actress who plays her daughter in this one has a sweeter and sunnier disposition than her Japanese counterpart.
Director Walter Salles, fresh from "The Motorcycle Diaries", gives this remake a more credible plot, but the creepy feeling I had when watching Nakata's original was no longer there. Maybe it is the music. Maybe it is the raincoat.
Horror fans looking for heart-stopping moments may be disappointed, but personally, this dark movie was still better than Nakata's recent Hollywood remake of his own sequel to "The Ring".
