According to the Media Development Authority website, the movie has been passed clean with R-21. Consumer advice states "strong violence".
And a violent movie it is indeed. The nudity is there all right, but it is nothing compared to the violence depicted in the movie. Like a "Mortal Kombat" video gaming fan's wet dream, there are many scenes of beheading, castration, and mutiliation of body parts.
Strangely, however, there didn't seem to be much gore that would turn the audience off. Perhaps it is the mainly black-and-white visual presentation that gave the graphic images a rather surreal quality, much the feeling one would get when reading the original graphic novels.
Nevertheless, while it didn't blow me away like "The Matrix" did as I thought it would, it was beautiful enough to attract me to watch it again. I don't wish to hype up anybody's expectations, but it is truly the most faithful movie adaptation of a comics book I've ever seen so far and it deserves a shot at the Palme d'Or in Cannes for the grit director Rodriguez showed in making the film.
For those who don't know what the movie is about, here is a synopsis from the Cannes Festival website:
The central story follows Marv, a tougher-than-nails street-fighter who has always played it his way. When Marv takes home a Goddess-like beauty named Goldie, only to have her wind up dead in his bed -- he scours the city to avenge the loss of the only drop of love his heart has ever known.
Then there's the tale of Dwight, a private investigator perpetually trying to leave trouble behind, even though it won't quit chasing after him. After a cop is killed in Old Town, Dwight will stop at nothing to protect his friends among the ladies of the night.
Finally, there's the yarn of John Hartigan - the last honest cop in Sin City. With just one ticking hour left to his career, he's going out with a bang as he makes a final bid to save an 11 year-old girl from the sadistic son of a Senator... with unexpected results.
