Welcome to the funny, sad but ultimately heart-warming workd of Torremolinos 73, the award-winning Spanish tragic-comedy by first time feature director Pablo Berger film about encyclopaedia salesman Alfredo Lopez and his wife Carmen's attempts to cope with their absurd yet tragic situation that has become a crowd pleaser at film festivals from the UK to the US.
In the process of making adult films Alfredo develops a passion for film-making and becomes obsessed with the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman while Carmen becomes a sex symbol in Scandanavia. Alfredo however tires of making the same type of movies repeatedly and decided to make his debut feature with Carmen in the lead role. But if in the beginning of the film money is Alfredo and Carmen's main problem, its solution only brings up other darker trouble as the film progresses.
More than just being a witty farce, Torremolinos 73 with its cine-literate humour, clever montage and cine-8 style framing and Berger's masterful story telling provides interesting social commentary about love and family. At the 2004 Edinburgh International Film Festival, one critic called it "one of the best comedies at this year's festival."

I've seen a couple..Spanish,French,Japanese and Korean..
You'r right abt the Spanish films they show in Sg..they seem to revolve ard a lot of sex,betrayals and affairs..
I remember this one called "The Sound of the Sea." I saw it at Lido..There were a few French movies I saw too..but I just can't remember the titles at this moment..
There was this one abt a girl dancer and a male nurse.Male nurse fell in love with the dancer.Dancer somehow got into a coma and the male nurse looked after her throughout the ordeal...ended up having sex with the patient in coma and impregnating her...Quite a shocker really. Just cant recall the title of the show.

The show u r talking abt is "Talk to her" by Pedro Almodovar, a well known Spanish director. Wat u left out was that there was another couple in the hospital, the guy was there bcos his gf, a matador was in a coma after being gorged by a bull. The guy n the nurse struck up an unlikely friendship due to the conditions of their respective wards. The nurse was eventually caught after his unethical act n committed suicide in jail. He left a note to the guy to take care of his dancer patient. The dancer gave birth in her comatose state n finally woke up. The guy on the behest of the nurse had a chance meeting with the dancer in a cinema and there was a hint of a romance before the end... And last but not least, the guy was actually a journalist who was doing a profile of the matador in the 1st place, who is in the process of a divorce. Very convoluted with lots of interwovened story lines. But that's the beauty of foreign films. Sex is part n parcel of their stories but not the main theme, often they explore human relationships and how they interact n react when put in various scenarios. Circumstantial situations n time is also cleverly manipulated. U shld go with a open heart n read between the lines when watching such shows. -

And You're right abt the role of sex in foreign films..It seems pretty common..especially the european films.Really eye -opening experience. Different culture Different way of films. -

n also recently watched Monseir N - about Napolean Bonapoartes last years during the recent French Film Festival...
n yesterday watched vcd of (not sure this the right title)..Balzac and the little Seamstress...about two guys n a girl...their cultural revolution experience...quite intersting but the chinese was so difficult to understand...most of the time spent reading the little english subtitles. -
i love foreign flicks
much better than the usual hollywood crud these days... or heck! just add in a non-hollywood based person in the writing of plot... like Julie Delpy did in the wonderful Before Sunset -

The gallery is in the beautiful forest, and the surrounding is just like fairy tales, but there are some uneasy things to enjoy themselves. The superintendent is hiding something from them. The doll maker Jae-won, who's helped by a wheel chair doesn't come out of her workroom. Hemi meets Mina, a mysterious girl who says she has known Hemi for years.
The strange noises at nightÂ…and the dolls seem to keep an eye on the every movement the guests are making as if they were real human beings

Yoo-jin (Lee Se-eun) is a high school girl who moves from Seoul to a remote village. She leads a terrible life at her new school because of constant harassment and bullying by classmates. In a desperate bid to escape the traumatizing experience and get back at the school bullies, Yoo-jin chants Bunshinsaba, an incantation that is supposed to facilitate communication with a spirit. The next day, her tormentors mysteriously begin to die. One girl commits suicide by lighting her face on fire while it is wrapped in a plastic bag covered with paint thinner. Another girl does the same. In an effort to dodge this dreadful death, a third girl tries to escape from the village, only to be killed by a car on the street.
Meanwhile, the school's new art teacher Eun-ju (Kim Gyu-ri) unintentionally scares the students in her first class. During roll call, she sees a student in seat No. 29 and calls her name, Kim In-suk (Lee Yu-ri), but the girl has long been dead, and all the students can see is an empty desk.
Due to the mysterious deaths, the entire village is gripped by horror and hysteria. The elders convene a meeting and conclude that Yoo-jin's presence is causing the tumult. They decide she has to leave.... -

But most are just more focussed on getting ON with the JOBS.
Storyline is perhaps more predictable and less important.
