Three months back, I started work at an advertising firm based in Singapore. I am perfectly fine with dealing with difficult bosses and clients because it is my job to meet their demands. Surprisingly, it is my co-workers that I find annoying. I find myself staying back after office hours not to clear my own work but to help them clear theirs! Yes, I smile at them every day at work and assist them whenever they need me but come on, I have my own deadlines to meet too! And whenever I say that I have too much on my plate, they’ll give me the “oh come on young boy! I’m sure you can handle this! Good learning opportunity for you!” crap. What ticks me off the most is when I heard them telling my boss that I have been slacking in office and that they have been doing my work for me – like come on, I freaking do their work for them and there they are saying that I have been stealing credit for things that they do?
I am by no means the most inexperienced in the team. I completed a six month internship with the advertising firm a year back but that was in a different department. I am now with the firm as a management trainee but I am seriously having second thoughts about staying on. I really want to value-add to the business and grow it but I find myself spending almost all my time doing their work for them just because I am more junior than they are.
What should I do?
You should have a good chat with your boss to give him a good idea what is going on really.
Don't let them step over you, hold a talk with your boss and your colleague on the same table to clear things out. It may turn ugly but at least you stood up for yourself.
All the best man.
Hey, I faced the same situation as you had before. For me, I quickly resigned and got myself out of the "troubled company"...there are so many jobs out there if you look hard enough, you'll surely find something better...
if you do others' work, they will be happy to collect their wages and let you do their work for them...
no good deed goes unpunished in the concrete jungle...
welcome to the meat grinder which is working life..
sometimes, u need to be confrontational in situations like these.
By being Mr Agreeable, you are doing yourself no good.
