Pros and Cons of working in a big company and small company

from my experiences, it seems easier to get along with colleagues in a small company cos everyone knows eachother and understand their character.
whereas in a big company, chances are, u only know the people in your own department. heck, i even came across people who don't even don't know people from their own department.
secondly, even if u know others from other departments but only sees them once in a while. u'll never know what their characters are. for example they might smile at u, talk and laugh together but once away u will never know that they might start talking bad about u behind their backs.
feel free to give comments and share your experiences.

Pros
1) Higher numeration (debatable?)
2) Greater opportunities for overseas advancement
3) Better fringe benefits
4) Multi-cultural, multi-national working environment (yes its a con too)
5) Defined job scope (as in more defined then a small company where you have to do everything)
6) More opportunities for career advancement + looks better on your resume (e.g. software engineer from microsoft)
Cons
1) Prone to constant restructuring or even downsizing
2) Multi-cultural, multi-national working environment (yes its a con too)
3) Less friendlier environment, greater degrees of office politics
Thats my personal experience with the company which I am in right now..

i feel that in a big company. everything is controlled by the various different departments. and that means RED TAPE. sometimes a simple thing must go through lots of parties before it can be done.
furthermore in a big company, even a mirror mistake is not tolerable. cos even if u make a small mistake. u most probably have to answer to lots of big bosses above. typical of big bosses, they like to ask who? what? where? how? and all those nonsense things. this is where when things goes wrong, arrows starts flying.
whereas in a small company people tend to be more friendly and qing cai about things. even if u make a mistake, they will mostly close one eye and will forgive and forget. -

i am stationed at a big company with thousands of staffs (i'm not 1 of their staff). all those big bosses and their ways of doing thing, arrowing, pointing fingers, shoot e-mails tell the world for every little mirror mistakes rally sickens me.Originally posted by gasband:eh it seems Gordon only have cons to talk about big companies and pros to talk about small companies 
at least in small company, when encountering problems, all will help and solve it together. small companies also tend to be more forgiving tho staffs making mistakes. more qing cai as long as it's not a big issue.
u will be suprised in a big company, even a small simple thing people can make a big fuss out of it. -

If you can survive in big companies, you can do the same in small companies. but whether you feel comfortable in a small company or not is another thing. Smaller companies in a starting up phase is a good chance for you to learn and perform at the same time if your company grows and one day made it big.

at least in small company, when encountering problems, all will help and solve it together. small companies also tend to be more forgiving tho staffs making mistakes. more qing cai as long as it's not a big issue.

and if they mass email to every staff of the company, regardless of department.. ple will start talking abt it etc etc.. then will make u feel like digging a hole and hide. -
it depends on your luck.
my former company has only 20 odd staff. but the politics is worst than that of 2000 staff.
many seniors ended up sacked or resigned. -

small company....get alot of free stuff, close & cohesive work environment
big company many policies to follow..but got better fringe benefits and better work references for the future
