When people joke with you. Half the time, they actually mean it.
Here are some examples using fictitious names for confidentiality:
Example 1
Jack: So Jimmy, how do you spend your time at home?
Jimmy: I masturbate to my heart's content seeing Pamela Anderson on my laptop.
Jack and Jimmy: Hahahahahahahahah!!!!
Example 2
Joan: Jill, are you the type who backstabs people in your workplace?
Jill: Are you kidding? I do that all the time!
Joan and Jill: Wahahahahaha!!!!!!
Example 3
Jones: John, so you enjoy eating sh|t?

My personal theory is that what is not said is more important than what people say. I find that analysing what people say, and juxtaposing it against what they would be expected to say along their obvious line of argument, shows up gaps that reveal what they're afraid of.
As a very generalised rule, I find that most people, maybe four out of five, like to show off what they don't have. This, of course, is a central factor in how banks operate.
Also, at the end of the day, the motivation for people to do things can be encapsulated in one simple question: "What's in it for me?".
No wonder I'm a psychologist who doesn't particularly like people much. -

Actually, come to think of it, you're partly right - Tajfel developed Social Identity Theory, and Leon Festinger developed Social Comparison Theory based upon Tajfel's work.
