  IMO, the version 10 of real player is a good improvement
  most websites require realplayer, so i got no choice but to install it
  version 10 is easier to change its settings & more features
  - for its spyware problem, you can try rename some of its file so that it will never reload again
  - set your firewall to "prompt" any connection made by realplayer. This way, you can allow the connection to play multimedia while you are able to block its self-updating connections
  - if possible, disable cookies in "tools" in realplayer
  - do a manual updating (once a month?) instead of permitting automatic updating
  
  note: Should you need to install real player 10, you should first uninstall "real alternative" {if you owns one). Otherwise, real player 10 might not work properly. (my desktop is still experiencing this problem )

  You can try out Real Alternative. It gives you the .rmb, .rmvb, .ra, the codecs most commonly used by Realplayer for. It uses media player classic to play the above formats. It is included in the install package. Can find it off www.free-codecs.com.

  after recommend by ppl here..i change to Real Alternative too.
  
  no more asking for update everytime like Realplayer.
  
  i heard Realplayer also high usage of RAM..

  but "real alternative" could not play some .ram files
  that is why i decided to switch back to realplayer 10
  but i didn't uninstall "realplayer alternative" first
  i think that caused the problem

  If you people don't enjoy using Apple Quicktime, there is Quick Alternative too, and it uses Media Player Classic to do like what I mentioned for the above.

  Strangely that has something to do with the VMR 9 render. Instead of using media player classic to play the .ram file. Use windows media player 9 and above. It might work, otherwise I think its just a corrupted .dll in the system32 folder. For such, you have to restart your comp before you reinstall Real Alternative, because the .dll starts running after you play a real file, and that makes proper installation of the .dll impossible.

  yup, "quicktime alternative" is a good alternative, literally
  you can watch movie trailer in quicktime format without installing Quicktime (Quicktime is quite intrusive too)
