Try reducing the number of shortcut icons on your desktop to the bare minimum. Recycle bin excluded. This saves your system from having to fetch too much data when booting up. Try putting all your shortcuts into one folder on your desktop.

Do you really need so much items running in the system tray at startup? Ask yourself. Do you really need winamp agent, Realplayer, MS office, or MSN to startup with you? Turn off their auto startups. System resources are taken up again as above.

For those who can do without the extra chioness and animation effects of their desktop can choose to revert back to the classic style via their display properties. You can still use newer start menu as in XP style.

Do a regular defrag of your system once a month would be good. Clean up your registry as well. You wouldn't want windows to load things that don't exist on your system anymore. Even better, clean up your shell context menus, take away the things you don't need. Its that little menu that pops out when u highlight a file and right click on it.

Don't display any wallpaper. For the really concious. Please don't throw stones at me.
