i was reading this thread and i realised i had to help.
anyways, when buying a modified ps2, make sure you know what chip you are getting. there are many out there, so choose the right one. have a look here... http://www.videogamesindonesia.com/labs/july/jul16/jul16ps2bg3_01.htm
ask the shopkeeper what chip is in the console. there is a chance he might lie.
so get him to try the chip out. test ps2 cds, dvds, originals, ps1 games, dvd movies, etc. see if they run like they are supposed to (this depends on the type of chip).
buy from a shop with warranty...i know this is hard but not impossible.
if they are willing to open the ps2 in front of you, that's even better because you can then verify the chip (note: you will need to know how the chip looks like).
so do lots of research on the net before you buy!!
of course, buying an unmodified ps2 and original games is always the best way to go. -
Just an advice.
If you wanna get a good PS2 set without being conned, make sure the price retailers offer seem sensible and resonable. I once asked a shop in Sim lim, the retailer said a modified PS2 ( messiah 2) plus 1 original dualshock2 and 1 original 8mb card cost $350 ! WTF !
That price definitely has some problems in it ! A normal set like wat i have described above could cost about 480 -550 !
I got my modified PS2 from Jurong west. The shop name is Seow Choon. It seems they are quite honest and reliable, coz all those PS2 are modified by themselves ! So any problem in the machine they will try their best to help you.
I heard from my frens that one of the shop in simlim is quite reliable but the others are probably dishonest -
I bought an original PS2... then i went to modify it... first few weeks ok... then knn later cannot run the games anymore... went to the shop ask the guy to check for me... he used my games can work... then i went home to try again... knn cannot work again... so pls go to a good shop if u want to modify...

try booting up without the memory card inserted...

sim lim is always a place of cheats....same goes to computer...i build myself but even so the stuff i bought also F### TUP....lucky my ps2 bought from my friend shop cheap and good

I got my PS2. Fully modified aka PS1 and PS2 comopatible. Plays DVD but haven't tried pirated DVDs yet although they claim is possible. Only problem is that when booting up pirated PS1 games, needs to reset the system so cannot use the smoothing function in the PS2. otherwise a dream. -

guys, get whatever consoles from this place, they are the main distributors to many places in spore. best and most trustable. they mod hundreds of pieces everyday, won't cheat. of course price is not at the lowest end, but can be sure of best value for money. got my PS2 latest mod at $450. they said we should suspect any price too far from this, could be "re-cond" or used, or low-end modified models. the shop front looks wear down (pre war houses), but man, behind is like a big work shop. it's along jalan besar before the canal before sim lim square, and opposite sim lim tower. shop name is seow choon, 13/15 jalan besar. tel: 62924400. website: www.seowchoon.com

Hi, I intent to buy PS 2 any recommendation is the shop call seow choon really good. Me thinking of getting the modified version so must get a reliable dealer. Anybody know what is the retail price for modified PS 2?
I have some question regards to PS 2, is US version of PS 2 is the best? Isit legal to have that version? How do see if it is a US version? what kind of chips are the best to use for modification PS 2 which allow to play all kinds of cds, dvd, pirated, original and etc?
Is all the modification need to reset when playing ps 1 game?
I hope someone can help me with all above question as i really wan to buy a PS 2 that value for money. Other related information relate to PS 2 is also appreciate.
