Why Pan Lingling hid news of her cancer

Channel 8 star Pan Lingling, who reportedly dropped out of a drama for health reasons last year, has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer but that it is now in remission.
According to an article in The Straits Times, the 43-year-old said scans found six cysts, of which one was a tumour, when she went for a regular checkup in March last year, and then underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to fight the disease.
She waited till she was in remission to tell the media as she said that she didn't want the "concern to be a burden" as she was going through treatment.
Pan, who has two sons said that she wanted to wait too so as not to let the bad news affect her sons.
"They still have to go to school, and I didn't want the news to affect them. It was a tough time for my kids and husband."
The actress, who is married to actor Huang Shinan, started filming police drama Mata Mata 2 today, and was extremely touched when her elder son Beckham dedicated an Instagram post to her beating cancer.
The 15-year-old posted a picture of her, with numerous hands giving her the thumbs-up, and the tagline "Beats Breast Cancer Like A Boss".
He wrote: "Since it's already over the net, I have to say this. Hey mum, it has been a tough time for you over the past year. I fully understand the pain you have suffered, trying to fight off this disastrous thing. I'm not embarrassed that my mum had breast cancer. I'm proud that she beat it with her own strength, she didn't put herself down and didn't give up. #HELLYEAH MUM!!!"
She choked up on the phone as she talked about her son's touching gesture.
Pan, whose father also found out that he had lung cancer last year and died on the third day of Chinese New Year this year, says: " When my son found out that I had cancer, he cried and said sorry for being a bad boy in the past. It was a very difficult year where my family tried to let me just be happy and go for treatment. So when my son posted this, it was so sweet."
