Next saturday, MediaCorp actress Fann Wong will represent Singapore at the 2012 Asia Song Festival, a prestigious music event held in Yeosu, South Korea, next month.
She's slated to perform alongside K-pop stars Kim Hyun Joong, MBLAQ, as well as Taiwan's Yoga Lin. But wait - does the Caldecott Queen even sing?
Wong, 41, did release five Mandarin albums in the late 90s. But having turned her attention away from singing for more than a decade now, it's little wonder netizens were quick to express their disapproval at her being picked as Singapore's representative.
Surely there are other better choices, like JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun, they said.
But are we being overly critical of Wong?
Her manager, in a response to the backlash, stressed that the local star is "recognised as an established artiste in the region".
LOUD gets 100.3 jocks Ken Low (KL) and Kenneth Kong (KK) to mouth off...
KK: Let's get things straight. Fann didn't volunteer for the event; she was selected by the organisers. So, they must have felt that she somewhat fits the bill.
KL: But she could have turned down the invite, couldn't she? Let's say the organisers invite you to perform, would you?
KK: It's not the same. I don't even have an album to my name!
KL: Yes, you're right. But honestly, is singing Fann's specialisation? Her albums were released so long ago, when I was still in secondary school.
It's natural for the public to feel that she doesn't deserve her spot in the festival line-up.
She could have given up the chance to a younger singer, someone like Derrick Hoh, Kelly Poon, Kelvin Tan Weilian or Joi Chua.
It would have meant so much more to them as it'd help expose their music to a wider audience.
KK: I don't think it's totally fair to say that.
Everyone needs opportunities and breakthroughs in their showbiz career. And it's common knowledge that female singers have a longer shelf life than their female acting counterparts - just look at veteran powerhouses Sandy Lam, Winnie Hsin and Tracy Huang.
Maybe Fann was looking for a platform to launch her singing comeback and the Asia Song Festival is timely.
KL: If it were Sandy Lam who would be singing at the festival, no one would bat an eyelid, because she does both - singing and acting - equally well. But Fann excels only in acting.
I'm just wondering, when people see her on stage, would they scratch their heads and go, 'Hmm, who's this?'
I'm sure the attendees at the festival would be mostly industry folks and music lovers, and they're definitely not the same people who follow Fann's drama series.
KK: Participants at music events don't necessarily have to be from the music industry.
There have been other examples, like (Fly Entertainment boss and actress-comedienne) Irene Ang, who was one of the judges at (last year's tvN K-pop Star Hunt Singapore audition leg).
We just have to trust that the organisers have their reasons for picking Fann.
As for her performance at the event, I hope she makes good use of it to prove to her detractors that she's deserving of her spot.
Catch Kenneth Kong (in blue) and Ken Low on Work~ING from weekdays 10am to 4pm. Only on Radio 100.3.
