  For Gigi Leung, freedom is not always a good thing.

  When Hong Kong singer-actress Gigi Leung joined her current record label, the ambitious star was said to be preparing to take on the movie industry and international markets.

  However, her album and movies received little attention and were barely noticeable for the past two years.

  The 34-year-old's career has been going downhill since she broke up with her ex-beau, Ekin Cheng, two years ago. Contrary to her girl-next-door image, the unfavourable reports had painted her as a scheming and difficult girlfriend, causing many to drop their support for the star.

  Recently, Gigi released a Cantopop album after a three-year hiatus. The singer was said to be actively involved in the production of the album, ranging from producing, song choices and album cover.

  While Gigi explained that was because the company gave her the freedom, insiders revealed that the 'freedom' was in fact, a sign of the company giving up on her.

  "Gigi's contact will be up next March and the company doesn't even want to extend it."
