The Obedient Wives' Club (OWC) was launched this month in Malaysia by Global Ikhwan, a group that also promotes polygamy as the solution for infidelity and other marital problems.
Global Ikhwan is an offshoot of the banned Al-Arqam movement that claims some 300 members in various countries, including Singapore. OWC vice-president Rohaya Mohamad, a doctor, said domestic violence, infidelity and prostitution stemmed from the lack of belief in God and the failure of women to satisfy their husbands. 'A man married to a woman who is as good or better than a prostitute in bed has no reason to stray. Rather than allowing him to sin, a woman must do all she can to ensure his desires are met,' she added.
Conservative elements have always tried to stem the tide of modernity. But gender equality and the fair treatment of both sexes have always been fundamental in modern societies - be they Islamic or non-Islamic.
Women's rights advocates have spoken up against the OWC, as has Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who said the club's message could tarnish the sanctity of Islam. However, the OWC has still gained enough traction to set up branches in Indonesia and Singapore.
In Singapore, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore has also clearly stated that the group's views are contrary to Islamic teachings and demean women and the concept of family.
At the end of the day, just as in a marriage, it boils down to how the parties involved decide to resolve their personal issues. Similarly, in the case of the OWC, how it is regarded and treated is a matter that is best resolved by the Muslim community itself.
Very shallow and prehistoric way of looking at the causes of marital infidelity. I think they should take a time travel back.
