A Singapore company is introducing adjustable-height heels.
Local start-up footwear company Gena embraces the unconventional, aiming to bring comfort and style to ladies in heels.
The whole concept is for women to be able to easily adjust the height of their heels anytime and anywhere in seconds.
Manufactured in China, Gena's heels can be easily adjusted to two heights, 2cm or 9cm, with a touch of a button.
For those seeking height, just press a small button on the side of the outsole, which will release a catch to pull the heel down. Then, step on the heel to lock it in its upright position.
To go back down to 2cm, push the heel upwards and tuck it under the outsole to lower the height.
These shoes come in pumps and sandals. All of their uppers and insoles are made from nappa leather, known for its luxurious feel, softness and durability.
Gena is the brainchild of shoe-lover Cherre Hermogena Eng. The 26-year-old came up with the idea three years ago, though the inspiration hit her at age 15.
She said: "I was out with my family near Boat Quay when I saw a few girls holding their heels, walking barefooted after clubbing. I thought it wasn't a nice sight, and I wanted to do something to change that."
Gena will be launched internationally on Kickstarter, a global crowdfunding platform, next month, with a price tag of $160.
Getting the shoes off the ground was not easy.
From flying to China and Hong Kong to find manufacturers, to working on the design and finding quality materials, it took Miss Eng a long time to decide on the final piece.
She has also invested a five figure sum in the business.
Miss Eng is confident that Gena can make it big and will stand out from the rest in the market.
She said: "I believe every pair of Gena heels can go a long way in helping women feel sexy and confident without constantly having to worry about the pain of wearing heels."
Think of the girls you always see in L’Oreal advertisements. The ones with the brown hair reaching to their waists who, for thirty seconds, exist only to wordlessly toss their glossy manes.
Now think of the complete opposite of that.
The Pob, short for “political bob”, is what Vogue has called the thinking woman’s hairstyle of choice. Worn most prominently by famous politicians Theresa May, Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton, it’s a trend that’s easy to miss at first glance.
Once you see it, impossible not to notice. And it’s right here in Singapore.
The female version of the power suit, the Pob is the hairstyle of choice for Indranee Rajah, Grace Fu, Sim Ann, Amy Khor, Josephine Teo, Low Yen Ling and Denise Phua. All Members of Parliament, all from the PAP, and all highly accomplished in their political careers, they occupy positions from Mayor to Senior Minister of State. They probably all go to the same hairdresser.
For all we know, Halimah Yacob could very well have a Pob too.
While there are outliers like the younger and less seasoned Members of Parliament Tin Pei Ling and Cheng Li Hui, the Pob still easily outnumbers their longer hairstyles 16 to 5.
So why the Pob?
Like Botox, the Pob is an excellent option for older women.
According to Salon Director Victor Liu from Chez Vous Hair Salon, a Bob or Pixie cut has the effect of “opening up one’s face and showing off one’s cheekbones for a classic yet younger vibe”.
Like Botox, the Pob is an excellent option for older women in particular (most of our MPs included) who want to look instantly younger.
“For women above 40, their hair ends can tend to be drier and puff outwards, resulting in triangular-looking or bottom-heavy hair, especially once it falls below the shoulders. This can ‘drag’ one’s energy and face down, making them look tired and unkempt.”
Pobs help to redistribute the weight of the hair back up to the crown. “This makes women appear more awake and youthful, and also creates some much-needed volume,” says Victor.
Age, in Singapore, is still seen as less of a valuable resource and more of a debilitating quality. Hence it’s become imperative that our MPs, although well into their fifties and sixties, don’t look like it.
And given our habit of splashing the faces of MPs across newspapers and large banners strung up outside community centres, appearances do matter.
The Pob in all it's variants.
But to truly understand how the Pob works, it’s important to understand what it isn’t.
The Pob is the very antithesis of long, luscious hair — a traditional symbol of femininity and overt female sexuality. While we may no longer consider femininity to be synonymous with being passive or weak, long hair is still often associated with vanity and being high maintenance.
While this may work in your favour if you’re a social media personality (influencer), it can be less effective when it comes to winning over voters. We want our female MPs to be desexualised. We don’t want to see them as women, we want to see them as politicians.
As Vogue puts it, the Pob is discreet, non-sexual, and says “woman able to compete in a man’s world”.
It aligns with Singapore’s conservative values, where someone who means business also needs to look non-intimidating and relatable. With a hairstyle like the Pob, you don’t look too ‘girlish’, all while appearing as mature and competent as one’s male counterparts.
We saw this happen back in the 2011 GE, where Tin Pei Ling was judged just for how she looked. No surprise that she was one of the few candidates who wore her long hair loose. These days, she wears a neater and more ‘conservative’ ponytail reminiscent of primary school regulations.
But should she ever want to be a Minister, she’ll probably have to let her ponytail go.
Hence, it’s not enough for our MPs to just be competent and adaptable. They need to look every bit the part too, regardless of what anyone says about looks not being everything.
This is where the Pob saves the day.
Given that gendered stereotypes continue to influence how various hairstyles and colours are perceived, none of our MPs rock big waves, fanciful perms, or wild colours. These are styles we intrinsically perceive as ‘unbecoming’ of politicians, given their common associations with loud, provocative, sometimes desirable female personalities.
Consequently, Pobs are styled to look like they’re easily managed, and the boldest shade is never bolder than brown.
Although this may seem bland and unimaginative, the payoff most certainly seems worth it. Our female MPs collect salaries of about $200,000 a year. For Ministers, that number jumps to a whopping $2 million a year.
So, say what you will about conforming to stereotypes. Adopting the Pob simply ensures you remain a cut above the rest, in more ways than one.
Activewear is an investment, and your spending shouldn't be limited to the most visible items you workout in like cool trainers and snazzy leggings, because your undergarments matter just as much. This is even more important for bustier women.
The size of your chest should never stand in the way of your active lifestyle and fitness pursuits, so if you're struggling with ill-fitting sports bras, or having to double-bra your way through every workout, the following tips will make your next sports bra shopping trip a complete success.
Workout gear is made from technical, durable fabrics, so instead of reaching for your regular underwear size, get measured so that you're wearing the right size. Due to the fact that brands tend to size their bras differently, you can't rely on your size in one style to be the perfect fit in similar offerings from different brands. To take the tediousness out of getting measured for each and every sportswear brand out there, head to a department store that stocks a variety of different brands, get measured, and ask for recommendations.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of manufacturing, bras for bustier women tend to cost more. If you're used to paying more for your regular underwear, don't expects your sports bras to be any different. While it may feel like a con, paying more for the right fit is important to supporting your back, minimizing the strain on your neck and shoulders, holding your bust secure, and preserving your delicate breast tissue.
Sacrificing style for fit and comfort can be hard, because let's face it, we all want to look good, even if it's just while jogging in the park. But, if you're on the bustier side, then function should be foremost in your mind when shopping for a sports bra. While you have options with fabric and color ways, be mindful of important features like comfortable and adjustable shoulder straps, supportive cups, and durable fastenings.
If you aren't used to wearing a cupped sports bra, it can take some getting used to. High-impact support bras are required to hold you secure without squishing you down while you're being active, and to do that they usually have a snug-fitting band and high cups. If your bra feels a little constricting to begin with, try breaking it in by wearing it around the house for a few hours before you work out in it.
If you pend enough money on your activewear, you'll appreciate it enough to want to wash every item correctly. While there are arguments for both hand and machine washing, we suggest the former. The agitation and high temperatures of machine washing can contribute to the breakdown of the elastic fibers in your sports bra, while hand-washing allows you more control of the temperature, force, and amount of detergent you use to wash your delicates.
4 Must-Knows Before You Purchase an ‘Investment’ Designer Bag
Men have their watches, and we girls have our bags. Major style factor aside, we love our designer bags because they aren’t just functional statement pieces, they’re also investment pieces. A carefully chosen bag can reap massive rewards in the future (looking at you, Chanel 2.55), so before you splurge out on your next piece, here are some tips to keep in mind.
TIP 1: SIZE MATTERS
Before you drop major cash on the tiny or oversized ‘It’ bag of the moment, ask yourself if the size is actually practical for your needs – you do actually want to use it, right? If your work bag is fraying at the seams and desperately needs replacing, then spend your hard-earned money wisely and replace it with a structured bag that can fit everything you need in a day, as opposed to a small, evening bag you’re only going to rock maybe once or twice a week. Remember that end of the day, designer or otherwise, a bag is meant to be more than a display piece!
TIP 2: CONSIDER THE COLOUR
If you are purchasing a designer bag with the intention of it being an actual investment piece, then stay clear from seasonal hues like neons or pastels and opt for the classic holy trinity of black, brown and grey. These colours are timeless, and have a better chance of increasing in value in the secondary market over time as opposed to this season’s hot pink. However, if you don’t plan to sell it off, then of course any colour you pick is fine, so long it goes with most of your wardrobe!
TIP 3: DO A CARRY TEST
What’s the point in dropping a few grand in a bag only to never use it because the straps keep slipping off your shoulders, or dig painfully into your skin? When you are in the market for a new designer bag, always be sure to do a carry test. Hold it as you would other bags of similar style (for example, if it’s a tote, wear it on the shoulder you always carry your bags on) and see how it feels and looks on you. Is it too heavy? Does it swing or hit your body in an awkward way? Is the length of the straps adjustable to suit your height? Does the size fit your frame? If it passes the test, then go ahead and hand over that credit card.
TIP 4: DO YOUR RESEARCH
So you’ve decided on the bag for you and it is time to bite the bullet and buy it, but don’t just run into the nearest boutique! Some designer bags can be purchased for cheaper online if you have a promo code or they’re holding a sale, and prices can vary across the various websites. If it’s a brand that you cannot buy online, consider getting it from overseas where it might be slightly cheaper. If you or a friend is heading overseas, do a quick price comparison with the retail price there and back home. Tip: if you do end up buying it from overseas, ditch the packaging and carry it back home on your person so you avoid paying extra taxes. It is an investment after all.
Fashion 999! 10 common outfit mishaps and how to fix them sharpish
A lot can go wrong in a day. Especially when we’re in a rush, and let’s be real here - when are we ever not in a rush? Surely we busy girls shouldn’t be punished for tearing abound trying to get everything done, but alas, we do. Our tights ladder, we get marks on our just-out-of-the-wash clothes, and just to top everything off, we’ll get a big fat blister from our excruciating, but annoyingly beautiful shoes.
But we come bearing good news! For every day-ruining fashion emergency, there’s a weird and wonderful hack to fix it, and it just so happens that we’ve collated ten of the best. So grab a pen and take note. Here’s everything you’ll need for some of the most common fashion emergencies.
Sure, having long nails looks great, but when you’re in a morning rush to get ready for the office, those perfectly lacquered cuticles aren’t so practical. Especially when wearing tights.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll pretty much know that there’s a 99% chance of laddering your tights BEFORE you put them on, but seeing as you should have left the house ten minutes ago, you go ahead anyway. Then lo and behold, ladder. Life really is unfair sometimes.
What to do:
Fortunately, hairspray can do a lot more than keep those flyaways in place. Try spraying some over your tights before you put them on. This will stiffen the material and help to prevent them from tearing, meaning you can enjoy both long nails and pristine tights.
You knew better than to put lipstick on before getting dressed, but you did it anyway. Consequently, you’re now left with a big stain that is so obvious, and looks really tough to get rid of. What is life! But don’t let that 100% avoidable big red smudge ruin your day, there’s something you can do about it after all.
What to do:
Guess what? Hairspray saves the day again! Just spray some directly onto the stain, leave it for 15 minutes, then wipe away with a cloth and warm water. This should remove the most of the stain, if not all of it, meaning you can wear that light top after all.
The alarm bells should have sounded when you struggled to do the zip up in the first place, but you weren’t going to let that get in the way of wearing your fave pencil skirt were you? Of course not. Unfortunately, it’s now stuck, and wearing it for the rest of your life shouldn’t have to be an option. Neither should hiding in a toilet cubicle playing tug of war with your own clothes.
What to do:
Head to the nearest bathroom and find some soap, then simply rub some against the zip until it’ll budge. It’ll also work with graphite, so if you’ve got a pencil to hand, rub this against the zipper instead.
Why is it that the prettiest shoes are always the most painful?? Whether you’re breaking in a new pair, or have a particular pair that always hurt, it never gets any easier. Fortunately, for the days you do choose to grin and bear the pain (then heavily regret your decision five minutes later) there is a quick fix.
What to do:
Find some gel deodorant from the nearest chemist, then simply wipe it over the blisters and painful areas for a little relief. It’ll provide a lubricating barrier between your poor foot and your shoe and reduce the friction, so you won’t have to hobble around in pain for the rest of the day.
It never gets less embarrassing, but we girls have curves and it’s just a fact of life that this means the occasional popping button. It’s also entirely typical that this will happen at the worst possible moment and in the most public of places. The good news is, with a simple addition to your handbag, you can make sure you’re always prepared in times of disaster.
What to do:
Get yourself some trusty safety pins! They’re great for fixing a popped button, and may also come in handy for a few other potential emergencies too. Simply loop one through your buttonhole to keep it in place until you get home, where you can fix it properly.
It happens to us all, but that doesn’t mean it EVER gets less annoying. Especially when it happens at the worst possible time, which let’s face it, is also the most likely. If you do happen to be on your way to an important date or meeting, or simply want to look like a prim and proper citizen of the world, then don’t despair; there is a solution!
What to do:
If your shoes are leather, rub a little toothpaste into the scuff then wipe it away with a cloth. This should remove all trace of the scuff, leaving them as if nothing had ever happened. If they’re suede, treat them more delicately and brush a rubber in one direction over the scuff until it’s gone.
Oh cruel world, why do you spite us with deodorant marks? All we want is to smell nice - is that too much to ask? Apparently it is, because whenever you put on a pristine, freshly washed black top, it’s an unfortunate fact of life that you’re probably going to mark it. Ahhh life.
What to do:
Instead of trying to wipe it off with water or whatever else you have to hand, take it off and rub your dress/top against itself. The fibres remove the white mark better than any cloth could, so just keep rubbing until it's disappeared.
This should save you the trouble of trying to wipe it away with water, meaning you can leave the house minus a patchy stained top that’ll only reveal the mark when it dries again.
…...but you really want to wear it and you can’t be bothered to iron / don’t have access to one. Ironing is such a bore isn’t it? Setting up the board, switching on the iron, waiting for it to heat up. We simply don’t have time for it, so what if there was a way to leave your clothes in a room, come back 15 minutes later and they’re all magically crease-free? News flash: There is!.
What to do:
Hang your clothes up in the bathroom, run a really hot shower and leave them in there with the door closed. Go make your breakfast, then come back 15 minutes later and all those pesky wrinkles should have dropped out like magic! You can also use straighteners to iron out any little kinks.
Off-the-shoulder tops may be a boho style-staple, but lift your arms up any more than 90 degrees and suddenly you’ve got a frumpy on-the-shoulder monstrosity. This isn’t entirely practical in day-to-day life, especially if you’re trying to reach for things in high places, but don’t worry - there’s light at the end of the tunnel with this hack!
What to do:
Get 2 elastic hair ties and 4 safety pins. Open 2 of the pins and hook them over either end of the hair tie. Then pin one end of the hair tie near the armpit inside your top on the front, and the other near the top of the arm on the back, so that it looks like you’ve attached two straps. Repeat on the other side and you’re all done! The elastic ties will pull the material down, meaning you can lift your arms no problemo. You can watch how to do this here.
Okay, so you thought you could get away with it when you tried it on at home, but now your gal pal has pointed out she can see your bra, you’re gonna have to do something about it. No matter how much you fiddle and smooth, that gaping space between shirt buttons is not going away, so best do something about it before heading out for that family meal later….
What to do:
Don’t worry, there’s a quick fix - and even better, you’ll be able to find it in any good stationery shop or supermaket. All you need is some double-sided tape to patch up those gaps.
Simply tear off a small section and attach directly to your top. It’s also great for keeping collars in place, or for attaching your bra to a strappy top so that it stays put!
I used to suffer with plantar fasciitis, heel spur and Morton's nueroma. Now I can walk all day and my feet and legs never hurt or get tired. Recently my old favorite dress shoes but the dust. I will be replacing them with a Orthofeet dress shoe. It's so wonderful to not have hurting feet. I love these shoes! They feel great and look great! They are my 5th pair of orthofeet.
