He was on his phone,
and she was on hers;
when they both sat
down at the table,
she shut hers off
while he talked on;
when the food came
she thanked the waiter
and he ended the call;
then they proceeded
to dine in silence. -

Same thing if you are in the company of people talking among themselves about stuff that you are not a part of. It's far lonelier than being alone in these cases, when you are being completely excluded even though you are with someone. -
