Must a poet be a writer?

Personally, I'm a writer. I'm a little young for that, but I just love it. Literature and English are my best and favourite subjects. My stories are posted on mediaminer.org. I was writing one day when the sudden desire to write poetry got me. Immediately, I went to the nearest store and bought a book. From then on, I write all my poems in that book. I've never shown it to anybody until I found out about this Forum which my Teacher showed me in class. My friend once got a peek at what I wrote in my book.
She said, "A Poet must be a Writer."
I wasn't a very good writer because I only concentrate on one point when I'm writing. The question has been bugging me for ages. Can anyone tell me the answer to this question? -

Using long bombastic words won't make you a good poet or a good writer.
You can try reading some poems from say Gilbert Koh.
He's one of Deadpoet's favourites.

If you like to write poems, just write.
Don't give a rat's ass about whether you have to be a writer or phd holder or an IQ of 200 to be a poet.

They didn't have time think about "Do I have to be a blah blah blah to paint/write/compose?" -

so if you want to write poetry, just follow your heart and write. but first you have to read. a lot.
read and compare the poets, their styles. -
Let's put it this way:
Any mother's son (or daughter) can be a poet. It is by no means necessary that you should be a writer.
If anything, I'm becoming a more prolific writer - but at the expense of my poetry. I spend a lot more time writing 1000-word entries in my blog than writing five-stanza pieces in my poetry notebook.
Seems to me that these days, I can express myself in prose better than in verse. I still do write the occasional poem, though not as much as before. I could fill up an A5-sized A'Zone notebook within five months in my heyday when I was in Sec 4 - but now I can't even complete one book in a year.
In the end, it also has to do with how you handle things. Apparently I find it hard to find a balance between prose and verse. I sincerely hope that you'll find the going easier than I do.

Well. If you were to consider that a poet's tools of the trade are words and concepts and ideas... then yes, a poet is a writer, a craftsman that builds and creates through language to convey an emotion, an observation, an abstract.
Think of the techniques a poet uses in his work: rhythm, alliteration, repetition, imagery, allusion, bathos, satire, hyperbole -- these are essential skills that an apt writer must possess in order to write a good piece of ... something.
And vice versa.
So yes, a poet is a writer who uses words to great effect, who uses a structural paupacity to fill in, ably, the gaps of meaning.
